Summary of Duties

The Veterinary Medical Center Microbiology Laboratory seeks a Veterinary Microbiology Lab Technician Supervisor. The successful candidate will be responsible for veterinary clinical diagnostic utilizing molecular techniques and assays, nucleic acid isolations, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), capillary electrophoresis, fragment analysis, genotyping, sequencing, fluorescence in situ hybridization; participating in test development and test validation; providing administrative and technical assistance to the director of the microbiology laboratory; supervising laboratory staff members; ensuring that laboratory requests/cases are attended to promptly and that results are entered into laboratory informatics system in a timely manner; implementing the Quality Assurance Program and ensuring compliance with standard operating protocols (SOP); assisting and conducting bacteriology and serological assays as required; participating in relevant microbiologic development efforts; training students in the professional curriculum and post-graduate programs; and other duties as assigned. The successful candidate will be expected to work 40 hours a week. Hours vary based upon laboratory schedule including rotating weekends, holidays, and evenings. Schedule is subject to change due to the needs of the service. Successful candidate must complete a background check.

Physical Requirements: Exposure to needle sticks, hazardous chemicals, and/or biohazardous waste; ability to use hand(s) for repetitive motions including single grasping, pushing & pulling and fine manipulation on a daily basis; ability to have long periods of visual concentration and attention; exposure to unpleasant odors. Requires weekend, nights, and/or holiday hours.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree; four years of experience in molecular techniques and laboratory supervisory role or three years if holds master’s degree or PhD.

Desired Qualifications

Completion of a Master of Science core program in microbiology with emphasis on molecular techniques; familiarity with infectious diseases; experience with medical or laboratory database; familiarity with QC/QA laboratory systems; experience in sterile technique and handling biological specimens; abilities to read, review written materials and effectively communicate and interact with the VMC Clinical laboratory stakeholders, both in person and over the telephone.

Target Salary $47,500.00 - $55,000.00 Annually
