Job Summary

Under the direction of the Microbiology Lab Manager, the incumbent provides resource and development in Microbiology and acts as the Microbiology Specialist and technical resource in the field of Mycobacteriology, Mycology and Parasitology. Collaborates and coordinates effectively with the various divisions of the Laboratory and its clients at all locations; ensures that all job duties are performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory agencies, and in a manner that denotes the team concept and reflects the UCSF and ZSFG mission, vision and values. Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The UCSF Clinical Laboratory (CL) at Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG) provides laboratory testing services for inpatients and outpatients of ZSFG, Laguna Honda Hospital, District Health Centers and other facilities under the auspices of the San Francisco Public Health Department.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate scientific field and minimum 2 years recent (within the last 2 years) experience as a licensed CLS or Public Health Microbiologist with recent experience in clinical microbiology or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a California Clinical Laboratory License or a similar license of equal or higher level issued by the State Department of Health.
  • Able to work independently, under pressure; recognize and resolve problems while maintaining a high level of organization.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills relative to clinical results.
  • Extensive knowledge of bacteriology and culture work up practices in a clinical microbiology laboratory.
  • Experience with a clinical laboratory computer system.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient in a database program such as Microsoft Access.

License/Certification

  • Possession of a California Clinical Laboratory License or a similar license of equal or higher level issued by the State Department of Health.
