Location: Los Angeles, CALIFORNIA
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

The University of Southern California (USC), founded in 1880, is the largest private employer in the City of Los Angeles. As an employee of USC, you will be a part of a world-class research university and a member of the "Trojan Family," which is comprised of the faculty, students and staff that make the university what it is.

The Keck School of Medicine (KSOM) of the University of Southern California (USC) and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) in the Department of Anesthesiology, in the Division of Anesthesiology, are actively seeking a full time Clinical Instructor of Anesthesiology to join our faculty as a Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology Fellow.

The one-year (12-month) Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia Fellowship Program is designed as a comprehensive educational and clinical training program to provide graduates the clinical expertise, scholarly experience, team leadership skills, and supervisory proficiency expected of consultants and leaders in the field of pediatric cardiac anesthesiology.

The experienced six member faculty in the Division of Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia is dedicated to care of children with congenital heart disease. The unique complexity and acuity of our patient population exposes the advanced fellow to an unmatched training opportunity.

A major component of the Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia Fellowship is geared toward supervised clinical care of cardiac surgical patients of increasing complexity and progression to independent practice.

Clinical areas of rotation will include cardiac surgical operating rooms, catheterization and electrophysiological laboratories, diagnostic imaging suites, and the general operating rooms providing anesthesia care for non-cardiac surgical procedures in children with congenital heart disease (repaired or unrepaired).

In addition, the Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia fellow will be given the opportunity to participate in emergency procedures, in order to provide a comprehensive training experience.

The Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia fellow will be exposed to:

•             The entire spectrum of surgery for complex congenital heart defects

•             Heart transplantation

•             Anesthetic management of patients receiving or depending on cardiac assist devices

•             Surgical procedures on ECMO.

Clinical elective rotations

The advanced fellowship will include clinical rotations in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU, 1 month).

The clinical rotation is intended to provide further experience in the perioperative medical and surgical management of children with congenital heart disease.

The fellow will be involved in bedside care of critically ill children, transitions of perioperative patients between operating room and CTICU, and Cardiac Critical Care didactic conferences.

Other learning opportunities:

•Pediatric echocardiography under the guidance of the cardiologist assigned to the echocardiography lab for reviewing perioperative echoes, intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography, and needful didactics for a better understanding of the pathophysiology of congenital heart disease

•Rotation with certified clinical perfusionists to acquire an in-depth understanding of the functional components and physiology of cardiopulmonary bypass in the pediatric patient

Educational program

As a future consultant in pediatric cardiac anesthesiology, the advanced fellow will be involved in consults as well as didactics for the pediatric anesthesia fellows.

Other educational opportunities include:

•Cardiac surgery weekly conference on Thursday mornings

•Attendance and active involvement in the pediatric fellow didactic series — the advanced fellow will coordinate and present lectures to the Pediatric Anesthesiology fellows during their Cardiac Anesthesiology rotation

Research

Clinical research during this limited time fellowship year is beyond the scope and not mandatory. Motivated fellows may choose to participate in current ongoing projects.
