Job Summary

Reporting to the Center for Health Law and Policy Innovation (CHLPI) Director of Whole Person Care, the Clinical Instructor will work independently and with Health Law and Policy Clinic (HLPC) leadership, staff and students to advocate for legal, regulatory, and policy reforms to expand access to high-quality healthcare; to reduce health disparities; and to promote more equitable and effective health and public health systems. 

This position represents a unique opportunity to work within Harvard Law School’s clinical program, to join a dynamic public interest and clinical teaching health and public health law and policy clinic, and practice in burgeoning areas of state and national importance. 


Job-Specific Responsibilities

As a Clinical Instructor, you will: 

  • Develop and oversee the portfolio of work on one or more of the Clinic’s initiatives designed to reduce health disparities by improving the ability of health care programs (e.g., state Medicaid programs) to identify and respond to social determinants of health (e.g., food, housing, transportation), explicitly working to advance racial justice and health equity goals; 

  • For each relevant initiative, lead project management activities including establishing and maintaining relationships with clients and partners, staying abreast of relevant developments, and helping develop and meet the expectations for grants and funders; 

  • Supervise and train clinical students on lawyering skills including problem-solving, law and policy analysis, research and writing, oral communication, and leadership; 

  • Work with clinical students to provide training, technical assistance, and other supports to clients, community partners, and coalitions on matters pertaining to policy development, advocacy, and implementation;  

  • Assist with development and teaching of classroom courses offered in conjunction with the Clinic; 

  • Deliver talks and trainings to clients, partners, and policymakers, and represent the Clinic at local and national conferences and events; 

  • Lead and support the administrative tasks of the Clinic, including conference and event planning, student outreach, communications, development, and other tasks that arise; and, 

  • Work with Clinic leadership to help develop and implement the vision for the future success of the innovative health law and policy work conducted by the HLPC. 


Basic Qualifications

JD Degree required, earned at least three years ago, a minimum of three years’ relevant experience and admitted to a state bar.  


Additional Qualifications and Skills

We are looking for people who have: 

  • Background in the fields of state health policy (e.g., Medicaid, Medicaid Managed Care, etc.), public health, health law, and/or community organizing and coalition leadership; 

  • Background or interest in issues related to the social determinants of health; 

  • Interest in teaching, mentoring, and motivating students; 

  • An interest in working with clients, colleagues, and students of diverse backgrounds; 

  • The ability to work well independently and as part of a team; and 

  • Exceptional research and analytical skills, and a strong ability to convey information orally and in writing. 


Additional Information

This is a three-year term appointment with potential for renewal, subject to departmental funding and need.
