Missoula College at the University of Montana is seeking applicants to join our program within the Department of Industrial Technology. Qualified individuals are invited to apply for a Clinical Instructor position, with the primary role of delivering both classroom and hands-on lab instruction, to join our team providing high quality education, training, and mentorship to students in our Diesel Technology/Transportation Studies Unit.

Missoula College offers degrees, certificates and workforce training across disciplines in the area of Transportation Studies, Including:

  • Two Year Associates of Applied Science in Diesel Technology
  • One Year Certificate of Applied Science in Heavy Equipment Operation
  • Non-Credit Training in Commercial Driver’s Licensing

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Assume primary responsibility for and exercise oversight on all courses assigned, in the area of expertise within Diesel Technology, including review, development, and/or enhancement or curriculum and learning exercises.
  • Participate in the overall strategic development and implementation of the mission, goals, and objectives of the Unit, as well as Program Pathways for related degrees, certificates, and workforce training.
  • Participate in on-going program assessment and work within team to develop plans to improve program coursework, delivery, and student success.
  • Maintain current knowledge of the industry and related professions as well as current educational methodologies.
  • Ensure that units of instruction follow syllabi which clearly state measurable objectives, student activities, learning resources, time allotment, grading criteria, and student evaluation methods.
  • Earn and maintain knowledge, credentials, and experience in multiple related industry programs.
  • Have the ability to complete training and achieve relevant Industry Recognized Credentials from ASE, OSHA, and others.
  • Engage in learning, training, or professional development opportunities on emerging industry trends, technology, teaching pedagogy, curriculum development in areas related to program goals and teaching assignments.
  • Serve in advisory role for related student organizations and groups, student competitions, or other projects related to the program and curriculum.
  • Work to recruit and regularly engage Industry advisory board members to provide program updates, curriculum improvement assistance and facilitate greater Industry participation.
  • Ensure training aids, tools and equipment are maintained and prepared for use in the classroom and lab.

Position Details:
  • Tenure Track Faculty: Clinical Instructor, Diesel Technology/Transportation Technology, Missoula College
  • Title: Clinical Instructor. Position Type: Academic (10-month)
  • Schedule: Full time academic year position
  • Entry Rate: for entry level; range depending on experience for lateral hires

  • Primary Duties: Teaching, Scholarship and Service. 
    • Teaching responsibilities may include a combination of required, elective, and clinical courses

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associates Degree plus minimum of four years related Industry Experience, or demonstrable equivalent progressive career experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated Industry experience in the troubleshooting and maintenance of diesel engines, heavy-duty truck air brake systems, Heavy equipment hydraulic systems, heavy-duty vehicle and equipment electrical systems, and vehicle HVAC systems
  • Competency using Microsoft Office programs like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Expected to learn and utilize the University of Montana learning management system for classes as well as grading and attendance
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, alumni, employers, faculty and staff
  • The ability to work and solve problems collaboratively and maintain a sense of cordiality in the workplace
  • Knowledge and ability to earn some of the relevant Manufacturer specific certifications, or certifications available through Industry Associations, including Caterpillar, Cummins, Paccar, John Deere, Bendix, OSHA and others

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Diesel Technology or related field, or expected completion within probationary period.
  • Knowledge of Two-Year Education and its mission and goals.
  • Previous teaching experience within a secondary, post-secondary, or workforce training institution.
  • Possess Manufacturer specific certifications such as Caterpillar, Cummins, Paccar, John Deere, Fleet Tire Certification for OSHA compliance, Bendix Brake Certification or others.
  • Prior experience developing, modifying, and implementing curriculum, or other workforce training.
