Open Rank Clinical Professor; Department of Teaching and Learning and Associate Director of Academic Affairs, Belin Blank Center. The successful candidate will demonstrate active engagement in equity, inclusivity, and anti-racist education, which are critical practices within our department and the College of Education. 


The position is a clinical, non-tenure track renewable appointment on a fiscal year (12-month) term. The clinical faculty member will have an academic appointment in Teaching and Learning and an administrative appointment in the Belin Blank Center (BBC, reporting directly to both the DEO in Teaching and Learning and the BBC Director). The successful candidate will provide leadership for the State of Iowa Talented and Gifted (TAG) endorsement and be responsible for professional learning opportunities for pre-service and in-service teachers and the university academy programs offered through the BBC. Faculty are required to engage in at least 4 hours per semester of collaboration with teachers in contributing to instruction in K-12 classrooms. The successful candidate will be involved with local, state, and national activities that support Talented and Gifted Education as well as equity in teacher education.


The following responsibilities and qualifications are associated with this position:


Responsibilities:



  • Teach the equivalent of 4 formal courses per semester (collegiate expectations for clinical faculty in the College of Education).




  • Coordinate the professional learning component of the BBC.




  • Coordinate College Board’s Advanced Placement Summer Institute.  




  • Scheduling coursework for multiple programs: State of Iowa TAG endorsement, MTLCC emphasis area, and BTLC certificate in TAG.




  • Supervise the coordination of the BBC’s university academy programs.




  • Assist with marketing and recruitment for the BBC’s university academy programs with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.




  • Coordinate the Honors Opportunity Program through the COE.




  • Collaborate with Iowa’s Area Education Agencies to foster outreach and professional learning. 




  • Assure the COE is in compliance with the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners TAG endorsement checklist.  




  • Advise and supervise those earning the TAG Endorsement (including the practicum experience)




  • Ensure professional learning and university programs are consistent with the BBC’s mission to create opportunities for the equitable development of talent, and diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts throughout the COE.




  • Serve as a faculty member in Department of Teaching and Learning (attend meetings, mentor graduate students).




  • Maintain an active line of professional productivity in the field of talent development.




  • Provide departmental, center, college, university, community, and professional service as appropriate.

    About the Belin-Blank Center


    Located in the Blank Honors Center, the Connie Belin and Jacqueline N. Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development conducts research, training, and service in talent development and disseminates information on the education of talented students. Professional development opportunities include the Belin-Blank Fellowship Program in Talented and Gifted Education, practicum and internship experiences, and coursework in gifted education (including coursework for the State of Iowa Talented and Gifted Endorsement).


    Precollege student programs include Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, above-level testing for students in grades 3–9, precollege summer and academic year programs for high-ability students in grades 2–11, and the Iowa Online Advanced Placement Academy.


    Other services include the Wallace Assessment and Counseling Clinic, which specializes in twice-exceptionality; and the Acceleration Institute, which is dedicated to the study of curricular acceleration for academically talented children. The center also administers the Bucksbaum Early Entrance Academy, an early-entrance program for talented high school students to enter UI after their junior year, and the Academy for Twice-Exceptionality, a support program for high ability students with autism spectrum disorder.


    About the Department of Teaching and Learning


    The Department of Teaching and Learning at the University of Iowa includes over 35 faculty members and 900 students with over 450 students majoring in Elementary Education. The Department houses nine teacher elementary and secondary licensure programs, multiple MA/MS/MAT programs, and 25+ endorsements in Teacher Education. The Teacher Education Program implements Core Principles that focus on equity in education. The department also has four PhD programs (Special Education; Literacy, Culture, and Language Education; Mathematics Education; Science Education).

    Education Requirement:

    Ph.D. in Education or related field; or, in progress.

    Required Qualifications:


    • A minimum of five years of direct experience providing professional learning in the field of education.




    • Evidence of effective administrative experience.




    • College teaching experience and evidence of effective teaching/training.




    • Record of successful collaboration with an institution of higher education and local, state, national, and international partnerships in the field of education.




    • K-12 teaching experience.




    • Demonstrated ability to create and foster an academic environment inclusive of culturally, linguistically, racially, and socioeconomically diverse populations.



    Desirable Qualifications:


    • Endorsement or similar qualifications in talented and gifted.




    • Experience working with students with disabilities, including autism.




    • Experience teaching in higher education settings.




    • Experience in building partnerships with local schools and communities.
