Job Description Summary:
The University of Kansas Landon Center on Aging Clinical Exercise Research Assistant position will facilitate the exercise intervention for a VA-funded research study as well as assist in recruitment, evaluation, scheduling, retention and education of patients for exercise and lifestyle-related clinical trials in cognition, physical function, lifestyle behaviors and frailty prevention; documentation per regulatory requirements; work with research team for protocol adherence and execution; data collection, data entry, and data quality control; contact study participant via phone calls and in-person visits at the testing facilities and participant’s homes; supporting regulatory adherence; and other duties as required. The individual in this position is expected to work closely with Investigators, Supervisors, project managers and coordinators to accomplish the overall goals of the division.

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, or other health related field. 

Preferred Qualifications

Education/Certification:  An exercise-related certification such as personal or group fitness instructor/trainer.

Work Experience:

  • Prior experience in lab or community-based research; especially related to managing data or electronic files.

  • Experience working with online conference programs like zoom or teams.

Skills

  • Strong working knowledge of exercise principles and guidelines

  • Ability to initiate and exercise independent judgment and decision- making skills.

  • Ability to work comfortably with a wide variety of individuals.

  • Ability to assemble components with provided instructions (I.e., set up an exercise bike).

  • Comfortable with visiting participant’s homes to deliver and set up recumbent bike.

  • Ability to operate personal computer and various software packages such as Word, EXCEL, and PowerPoint.

  • Attention to detail; good time-management skills; strong work-ethic; self-motivated; willing to learn; good interpersonal skills; strong organizational skills; excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team setting as well as independently.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

Participant Recruitment:
Pre-screen potential participants’ eligibility for currently enrolling clinical trials in the Kansas City VA and KUMC by closely reviewing records and databases and by interviewing and scheduling potential participants. Educates potential participants about the expectations and requirements of the exercise trials.

Evaluation, data collection and data entry:
Assist the study coordinator by preparing source documents, lab draw kits, and other materials for study visits.  Assist with basic data collection such as demographic information, health history, physical performance testing, and similar. Assist the study coordinator in entering the collected data into electronic database. Assist with checking entered data against existing records for quality, completeness and accuracy, and other duties related to data management as needed. May assist in the administration of physical and cognitive performance assessments in participants.  May assist in the processing, handling, and analysis of human blood samples.

Retention of participants and exercise intervention facilitation; protocol adherence:
Facilitate exercise intervention with enrolled study participants to achieve the goals of the research project.  Participant retention through motivation to adhere to the protocol and maintain good relationship during the study.  Check in calls with participants

Visit protocol execution:

Facilitate exercise intervention visits in-person and virtually via an on-line platform and administer tests and surveys. Follow study protocols and procedures to acquire measures and maintain participant safety. Collect and record testing measures using paper and electronic capture resources. High Intensity Interval training or stretching performed at the Kansas City VA or at participant’s home remotely. Access to transportation to deliver and set up recumbent bike (up to 50 lbs) in participant’s homes and teach them how to use the equipment, then deliver remaining exercise sessions remotely using an on-line platform. Collect exercise log data and other study related materials and information.

Scheduling:
Assist the study coordinator with scheduling of study visits, including study clinical evaluation visits, communicate with all parties involved including the participant as well as the entire study team.  Complete visit reminder calls.

Regulatory:
Assist the study coordinator in ensuring regulatory documents are kept current and complete including obtaining PI review/signature on required documents, obtaining updated medical licenses, CV’s, etc. as needed, and filing of IRB approvals as well as all other regulatory documentation.

Presentations & Other Duties as Assigned:

Contribute at lab meetings including occasional presentations at lab meetings and other duties as assigned.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
