Essential Job Duties
The specific purpose of this position is to support clinical education by working with clinical faculty, house officers, and staff to identify and clarify rotation outcomes; ensure that rotation resources (sample documents, recommended references, learning objectives, schedules, SOPs, personnel names and roles, etc.) are current, accessible, and adhering to a common format; supporting clinical students through rotation orientation support, support and supervision during patient care activities, the provision of direct feedback on clinical skills, and training/remediation as needed for students who require support in completing clinical tasks.
This position will work under the Director of Clinical Education and will be assigned to several clinical services that work in the Large Animal Hospital. This position will supplement and not replace the role of faculty, staff, and house officers in coordinating instruction and clinical case management on the rotation. This position will not be assigned to routine clinical duties apart from student support.
Specific duties under each category are summarized below:
Supervision of Clinical Rotations:
  • Plan and coordinate student orientation for clinical rotations.
  • Maintain accurate orientation materials by establishing and enforcing organizational standards.
  • Maintain and manage course Moodle sites to ensure learning outcomes, goals, and that expectations are clear to students.
  • Communicate goals and expectations to students via appropriate channels (ie: pre-rotation materials, orientation materials).
  • Maintain IACUCs for animals utilized for teaching; serve as the person on record for IACUC inspections.
  • Work with the Director of Clinical Education and the Associate Dean of Hospital Services to identify and implement training, policies, or supports needed for rotations to provide a safe, healthy work environment.
  • Coordinate appropriate remediation of students.
  • Serve as supervisory liaison between the students and the faculty.

Instructional Support:
  • Assist students during morning treatments and in providing patient care.
  • Assist students with sample collection and submission.
  • Instruct novice students on clinical techniques such as medication administration, equine handling, catheter placement, sample collection, etc.
  • Work with students who require support or supervision for completing rotation specific paperwork such as treatment sheets and electronic medical records.
  • Remediate students struggling in areas outlined above.

Assessment Support:
  • Coordinate the development of rotation specific student assessments.
  • Organize and oversee assessment of student performance.
  • Gather and summarize feedback for the purposes of midblock and end of ration assessment.
Other Responsibilities
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or a Biological Science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
Some positions may require compliance with current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations.
Other Required Qualifications
  • Self-starter with an analytical and collaborative mind-set who can effectively work independently.
  • Desire to teach veterinary students in all aspects of clinical skills instruction.
  • Enthusiasm for supervising students and assessing their work.
  • Commitment to helping provide the best CVM student experience possible.
  • Familiarity and experience with routine technical skills used in ruminant and equine patient treatment.
  • Ability to handle and restrain horses and ruminants.
  • Familiarity with feedback techniques and communication tools to motivate learners.
  • Previous experience working independently to identify problems and plan methods and techniques for solving technical problems.
  • Exemplary communication skills to work with faculty veterinarians, students, house officers, and staff.
  • Strong organization/coordination skills.
  • An ability to write instructional sheets for clinical skills tasks following some basic training.
  • Desire to complete additional training in education.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and 90 pounds with assistance
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and spreadsheet management.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Training and/or experience to include veterinary clinical medicine and surgery experience in a veterinary college, or familiarity with medical terminology
  • Previous technical, clinical, and equine handling experience required.
Required License or Certification
  • A valid NC driver’s license must be obtained within 60 days of start date and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • NC Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or ability to obtain NC Registration within 6 months of date of hire.
