The Clinical Dietitian is primarily responsible for providing comprehensive clinical nutrition care that serves the needs of a diverse campus community. The primary responsibility is to function as the Nutrition Therapist on the interdisciplinary eating disorders treatment team as well as a clinical dietitian for students with complex medical needs. In addition, this individual must be able to cross-cover and support the Sports Dietitian for the Athletic Medicine Department. The Clinical Dietitian also provides expertise and input to the campus community through collaboration with the Health Promotion and Prevention program.
In collaboration with his/her supervisor, the Clinical Dietitian is responsible for the technical, professional and administrative responsibilities required to plan, organize, implement, and evaluate a functionally comprehensive clinical nutrition program at UHS. While the Clinical Dietitian reports to the Associate Director, Medical Services, they also work under the supervision and guidance of the Director of Athletic Medicine related to work with varsity athletes and teams when supporting the Sports Dietitian.
This position is a 50% duty time, 12 month position.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical Care (80%)
Eating Disorders Nutrition (60%)
- Participates as an interdisciplinary team member on the Eating Disorders Team, including participation in team meetings.
- Provides nutrition therapy for students with sub-clinical and clinical eating disorders.
- Conducts therapeutic eating sessions with students when appropriate.
- Participates in making treatment recommendations for college deans, patients, and families.
- Serves as a resource to campus community regarding the prevention and management of eating disorders including conducting training for Resident Advisors, Wellness Leaders, and Peer Advisors.
Students with complex medical needs (20%)
- Provides Medical Nutrition Therapy for students with nutrition issues related to medical problems such as Type I or II diabetes, hypertension, lipid disorders, metabolic syndrome, immunologic disorder, or celiac disease referred by UHS medical providers.
- Participates as an interdisciplinary team member in the outpatient medical clinic by coordinating nutritional care recommendations with referring medical services providers
Sports Dietetics (as needed)
- Provides clinical and educational sports dietetics services for all varsity athletes under the direction and guidance of the Director of Athletic Medicine.
- Provides eating disorders care for athletes in treatment, and prevention services for athletes at risk.
- Oversees weight management program for weight class sports including directing collaboration between UHS and Athletics staff.
- Provides outreach to the coaching staff and teams, and conducts trainings on performance nutrition.
Business and Quality Integration
- Authors, edits, and maintains the Nutrition Services Policy and Procedure Manual. Partners with appropriate internal and external departments in crafting evidenced based policies.
- Identifies, reviews, and prioritizes opportunities to improve organization efficiency and effectiveness through the use of technology and automation. Develops and maintains the nutrition templates in the EMR with communication, efficiency, data use, and outcome evaluations at the forefront. Appropriately implements current dietetics language and scope. Advises on accurate use of nutrition related procedural and diagnostic codes.
- Develops goals and objectives for the clinical program and proposes nutrition policy changes regarding patient treatment and health care issues related to the provision of nutrition therapy.
- As time allows, and in collaboration with his/her supervisor, may establish UHS as a community partner in meeting the needs of area dietetic students. May develop and coordinate experiential learning opportunities with local Universities and Dietetic Internships to offer rotations in college health or sports dietetics.
- May lead and direct the work of others including student peer advisors, student workers, nutrition students or dietetic interns.
- Functions as the budget manager for the overall operating budget for Clinical and Sports Nutrition.
- Develops and analyzes the operating budget using historical data, and trends while meeting requirements of the UHS Finance department.
- Determines capital budget needs based on equipment condition, system design, and market developments to ensure necessary resources for provision of high-quality nutrition resources.
Health Promotion & Education (5%)
- Provides educational and outreach programming for the University community on nutrition and health related topics in collaboration with Health Promotion and Prevention.
- Is responsible for nutrition related web-content.
- Oversees the nutrition education materials used by staff.
- Serves as campus wide nutrition resource by providing support to the colleges and programs such as OA, ROTC, and Dining Services.
Performs other duties as assigned
- Bachelor’s degree in clinical nutrition, food and nutrition, or related area, granted from a US regionally accredited college or university.
- Completion of a didactic program in dietetics and supervised practice program approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association.
- Active registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association
- Certification/Licensure as required by state of practice
- A minimum of 5 years of experience with proven ability to be self-directed, to forge partnership, and to collaborate across disciplines.
- Solid clinical skills, experience as a sports dietitian working with athletes, and a minimum of 2 years of experience in nutrition counseling for eating disorders.
- Master’s degree in Nutrition or a related field
- Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) and/or Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian (CEDRD)
