Position Summary
The Clinical Counselor provides counseling services for the Counseling Center/Behavioral Health Services at the University of the Incarnate Word’s main campus, School of Osteopathic Medicine campus (located at Brooks City Base), and other UIW campuses as needed. This position is responsible for providing individual, family, couples, and group counseling; crisis assessment/intervention and psychoeducational presentations; and counseling and referral services to employees when needed. The Clinical Counselor reports to the Director of Counseling Services.

Description of Job Duties
  • Provides direct counseling, online counseling, assessment, psychoeducation, and referral to clients in need of behavioral health services.
  • Provides individual, family, couples, and group counseling.
  • Provides crisis intervention and emergency walk-in services.
  • Conducts assessment and provides diagnosis when needed.
  • Provides clinical consultation to university community and serves on university committees.
  • Adheres to all professional ethical guidelines, including the maintenance of confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA/ FERPA/insurance and other university federal and state requirements.
  • Provides coverage as issues arise and as additional collaborative meetings are requested.
  • Provides consultation, mediation, psychoeducation, and outreach services and programs to the campus, faculty, staff, and students (i.e., orientations).
  • Works alongside interns in the provision of counseling services, psychoeducation, and consultation.
  • Conducts programming and outreach.
  • Promotes counseling services to the campus community.
  • Represents the Counseling Center at campus community events, School of Osteopathic Medicine events, and at conferences.
  • Attends administrative, staff development, required training, and supervision meetings.
  • Contributes time to development of special behavioral health initiatives and grant-funded projects connected to the Counseling Center and Osteopathic School of Medicine.
  • Completes necessary and required documentation within 48 hours as consistent with professional and office expectations.
  • Serves as a consultant for faculty, staff, and parents on behavioral issues.
  • Works collaboratively with student groups and other academic and student support departments.
  • Establishes cooperative relationships with campus, university, and community resources.
  • Assists with updating web page as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated proficiency and strong knowledge of all professional ethical guidelines, including the maintenance of confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA/ FERPA/insurance and other university federal and state requirements.
  • Strong knowledge in a variety of evidenced based and brief counseling modalities.
  • Proficiency of assessment and treatment planning.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in providing counseling to culturally diverse populations with a variety of life challenges/diagnoses, including children and adults, military populations, survivors of violence/ sexual assault, and international clients.
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively with team members, and as a part of a multi-disciplinary team; must be able to work in conjunction with behavioral health interns working towards graduation or licensure.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in ability to manage conflict.
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively; excellent interpersonal, written, oral/presentation skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Strong computers skills to include Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access), social media, and providing on-line counseling.
  • Ability to participate in professional development opportunities and continuing education to maintain licensure.
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of community resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to practice cultural competence and proficiency with crisis intervention.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.
Required Education
Master’s Degree in counseling or related field.
Required Work Experience
Minimum of one (1) year of clinical counseling experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual (Spanish).
  • Counseling experience in higher education/health care setting.
  • Doctorate in Counseling or related field.
Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations
  • Current Texas Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).
  • Must hold a valid driver license, must be at least 21 years of age, and have driving record insurable by UIW insurance carrier to be able to drive to different UIW campuses as needed.
  • Must be eligible for insurance credentialing.
Work Hours
Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm with extended hours as needed to meet departmental goals. Must be flexible to meet the needs of UIW students. May require occasional weekend work for special events.
