Description of Work Unit
The Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition is one of eight academic programs in the College of Health and Human Sciences. Colorado State University (CSU) is Colorado’s land grant institution and holds the Doctoral/Research University – Extensive classification from the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education. The Department 28 faculty and adjunct members and 18 research associates and administrative staff, ~450 undergraduate students and offers undergraduate degrees in Nutrition and Food Science, Hospitality Management and Fermentation Science and Technology. The department also offers MS and PhD degrees in Nutrition Science, Community Nutrition and Food Science and Safety and currently has ~50 graduate students. Department research is supported by federal grants from NIH, USDA, foundations, industry and two endowments that support a faculty chair and the Lillian Fountain-Smith Nutrition Conference hosted by the department.
Position Summary
Researchers in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at the Colorado State University (CSU) in Fort Collins, Colorado are looking for a highly motivated college graduate to serve as a research associate. The research associate will serve as a clinical research coordinator for grant-funded clinical research trials pertaining to the role of foods, diet, and nutrition in human health, primarily cardiovascular, metabolic, and gastrointestinal health. Responsibilities include clinical study coordination, recruitment of study participants, working directly with study participants, data collection, data entry, biospecimen processing, laboratory and other analyses, setting up for study visits, and administrative and clerical duties such as assisting with grant applications, institutional review board protocols, and clinical trial registration. A flexible work schedule, including some weekend and after-school hours, is necessary. Opportunities for this position include but are not limited to: (1) Gaining experience working with participants in a clinical setting; (2) Training in a wide range of assessments of human health; (3) Mentorship from expert collaborators in the fields of food and nutrition sciences, dietetics, health and exercise sciences, and agricultural sciences; (4) Potential for authorship on scientific publications and presentations; (5) Implementation of data entry tools; (6) Implementation and regular monitoring of regulatory and Institutional Review Board (IRB) required activities including but not limited to IRB approvals, sponsor memos, statistical reports, documentation of adverse events, and performance of quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) activities; (8) Drafting Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for approval; (9) Training study staff and students on IRB and laboratory specific SOPs; (10) Review and revision of project related documents; (11) Management of data and laboratory biospecimens; (12) and clinical trial registration.
Required Job Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in nutrition, food science, dietetics, public health, exercise science, physiology, or other related field.
· At least one year of experience working with research participants in the clinical research setting.
· A flexible schedule and willingness to work early mornings and occasional weekends.
· Strong organizational and time management skills with ability to work independently and with other personnel to meet deadlines, meet study goals and timelines, and ensure compliance with protocols and quality control.
· Have excellent interpersonal skills and verbal/written communication.
· Proficient in computer applications, specifically Microsoft Office Suite.
· Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Preferred Job Qualifications
· A Master’s degree in nutrition, food science, dietetics, public health exercise science, physiology, or other related field.
· Prior experience coordinating clinical studies.
· Prior experience assessing cardiovascular, metabolic, and gastrointestinal health.
· One-year minimal commitment.
· Basic knowledge of statistics and able to do basic calculations.
