Under general direction, the Clinical Coding Specialist I, is responsible for the coding and auditing of the clinic visits and procedures, and communicating to physicians coding problems and information.

What you need to know

Required Education and Experience:

  • Associates degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Three years of related experience in medical billing/coding

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others

  • Ability to perform all tasks and job responsibilities safely without injury to self and others in compliance with A&M System and HSC guidelines

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, proprietary practice management software

  • Understanding of compliance requirements for medical services documentation to support billing or appealing claims to all payers

  • Excellent communication skill (written and oral) and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to communicate with physicians, nursing and administrative staff to educate and assist with knowledge of medical documentation requirements to achieve compliance for billing

Preferred Education:

  • Associates degree or higher

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • AAPC or AHIMA Coding Certification

Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Coding - Reviews charts in PM System for compliance with regulations for billing specific services and residency documentation and signature requirements. Utilizes CMS guidelines unless other payer is more stringent. Codes encounters, builds invoices and releases for claims filing once completed.

  • Billing/Coding Review - Reviews all invoices placed on hold by Billing Company for corrections or information that may be required to refile, appeal claim or advice Billing Company of other handling procedures necessary specific to issue. Uploads medical records required through M Drive to Billing Company.

  • Billing/Coding Resolution - Answers questions from Faculty and Residents as it pertains to coding requirements, and communicates problems in coding compliance to Manager as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.
