Position Title: School of Medicine Department Chair

 

School: Creighton University School of Medicine

 

Academic Partner: CHI Health

 

Reporting Structure: Dean, School of Medicine (Academic and Research Mission)

CEO, CHI Health (Clinical Mission)

 

Role: The School of Medicine Department Chair has general responsibility for the academic and research activities of their respective department. Depending on the department, this position may also be responsible for the clinical activity as well. The categories and specific duties for this chair position are identified below:

 

Vision and Direction :

  • Advance a mission, vision, and direction for the department, congruent with the university and clinical partners missions.
  • Develop and maintain an atmosphere of creativity and scholarly interest.
  • Provide direction and oversight to ensure that the missions of undergraduate and graduate medical education, clinical and research programs, and community service are well developed.

 

Mentor Faculty:  

  • Recognize the strengths and weaknesses of faculty members and appropriately use these to the departments’ advantage.
  • Assess faculty for leadership acumen and provide coaching, mentoring and leadership training for these faculty.
  • Provide faculty with assistance in the development of research protocols and the preparation and submission of grant applications, in addition to ongoing oversight of clinical and/or laboratory research.
  • Critically review faculty manuscripts to ensure they are publishable.
  • Nominate faculty for membership in scholarly societies and facilitate appropriate faculty participation in regional, national, and international academic activities.
  • Provide examples of scholarly activity to the faculty by participating in research or scholarly activity that culminates in publications in relevant journals and books.

 

Evaluation of faculty performance:

  • Conduct annual faculty evaluations to establish faculty expectations for the various teaching, clinical and/or research responsibilities.
  •  Evaluate performance in accordance with the expectations in such a way that faculty with exceptional performance are acknowledged.
  • Provide feedback to faculty regarding sub-standard performance and develop plans with the faculty to make improvement.
  • Ensure that faculty members exceptional performance or accomplishments is shared and celebrated with all Department faculty and staff.
  • Review the faculty’s progress relevant to appointment, reappointment, promotion, and tenure actions to ensure they are on track for promotion and/or increased responsibility.

 

Develop and maintain successful clinical programs .

  • Collaborate with the Clinical Affiliate leadership to develop clinical programs that meet the needs of the undergraduate and graduate students, the health system, and the community.
  •  Ensure that the clinical programs support the CUSOM mission.
  •  Participate with the service line of the Clinical Affiliate in strategic planning, recruitment, compensation, work standards and evaluation of providers.
  • Review the clinical, academic and research activities of all faculty to ensure that the workload is appropriately distributed.

 

Develop and maintain excellent educational programs :

  • Ensure that the department obtains excellent student and resident/fellow evaluations of curricula specific to their department.
  • Develop or assign faculty to develop appropriate new curricular initiatives, which maintain excellent and outstanding evaluations for teaching performance by faculty as attending physicians in outpatient and inpatient areas.
  • Develop and maintain formal lectures and conferences which result in excellent ratings.
  • Establish a format that will enable clinical faculty to have sufficient lead time to clear their clinical schedule when asked to provide teaching on the Creighton campus.
  • Collaborate with the Program Director, Course Director, Clerkship Director, and core faculty to develop recommendations for the long-range goals of the academic mission.
  • Collaborate with the Continuing Medical Education Program to offer Grand Rounds lectures, guest lectures and local/regional conferences.

 

Lead and attend Department/SOM meetings : 

  • Attend regular leadership meetings with the Dean of the School of Medicine and with the CEO/CMO of the Clinical Partners.
  • Conduct regularly scheduled faculty meetings to provide information on SOM activities, update department planning and to foster collegial relationships.
  • Serve on appropriate standing committees of the Clinical Partner and School of Medicine.
  • Serve on special task forces or councils as appointed by the Dean or CEO.
  • Attend regularly scheduled departmental activities such as Grand Rounds and research conferences.

 

Faculty Recruitment :  

  • Collaborate with the Clinical Partner to establish/update the process for the recruitment of faculty members and clinical providers.
  • Participate in strategic planning with both the Creighton School of Medicine and the Clinical Partner to identify the teaching and clinical positions that will foster departmental growth.
  • Identify the amount of academic faculty FTEs that are necessary for teaching and precepting medical students.
  • Participate in the interview process of all provider candidates, (teaching, research, and clinical candidates).

Financial and Facilities management.

  • Participate and add input into yearly budget planning, management, and reporting for each fiscal academic year.
  • Manage the department’s physical facilities, the assignment of space and the maintenance of department equipment.
