Responsibilities*

The Cardiovascular Center's Cardiology Procedures Unit is currently seeking a Cardiac Electrophysiology Arrhythmia Clinical Care Coordinator. 

The Arrhythmia office nurse provides comprehensive nursing case management to Electrophysiology (EP) patients in the Arrhythmia and Device clinics from the adolescent, adult, and geriatric age groups.  The nurse will coordinate procedural preparation and follow up for patients with complex cardiac arrhythmias and disorders.  It is required that he or she collaborates with other health care professionals, such as physicians, referring offices, scheduling, nursing, and diagnostic services to provide a coordinated plan of care for our patients.  He or she will review patient medical records from referring physicians and establish diagnosis and treatment plan with the medical staff, per protocol orders lab-work and other testing as well as initiate anticoagulation as necessary.

The nurse screens all Cardiac Procedures Unit patients’ pre-procedure to identify problems that may lead to complications.  Telephone management and excellent communication skills are essential to this position.  The position includes a thorough evaluation of medical history for out-of-state or long distant patient population using communication mechanisms including fax, telephone, and electronic mail.

Evaluation of the daily scheduling of patients in coordination with each patient's individual testing needs requires attention to detail.  He or she must incorporate knowledge of each specific EP procedure as well as the individual patients testing and preparation requirements to ensure the patient-care flow through the department and UMHS during the day of procedure is as efficient and safe as possible.

The nurse develops, evaluates, and reviews current nursing protocols and standards of care for cardiac patients utilizing current research and clinical practice guidelines.  He or she will participate in the development and implementation of ongoing education for the nursing aspects of cardiac electrophysiology.

The nurse works collaboratively with colleagues to develop, evaluate and revise patient education programs and materials. He or She develops tools to evaluate patient education outcomes from various educational interventions and participate in clinical research with the arrhythmia program.

Actual RSAM LEVEL and salary will be determined at time of hire.

RSAM levels range from CCC-COMPETENT-NE to CCC-EXPERT-NE to CCC-MASTERY-NE.


Required Qualifications*
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing
  • Minimum of 5 years of recent adult cardiovascular procedure experience in an acute care setting. Preferably experienced with EP procedures.
  • Recent experience providing outpatient phone triage to pre-procedure patients.

  •  Demonstrated expert knowledge of adult cardiac physiology and EP procedures. 
  •  Demonstrated knowledge and experience in planning, developing, and implementing complex Continuous Quality Improvement activities. 
  • Demonstrated active participation in formal unit improvement committees including but not limited to Professional Practice Councils, or other committee or QI work. ACLS certified.
  • Demonstrated expert clinical leadership abilities in pre-procedure or other high acuity population. 
  • Must be detail oriented and be able to manage rapidly changing clinical situations in inpatient and outpatient settings. 
  •  Demonstrated ability to anticipate the clinical care needs of complex patients.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as organizational abilities
  • Highly motivated and self-directed with demonstrated ability to function independently and as a team member. 
  •  Must demonstrate a high level of independent problem solving and decision-making abilities. 
  • Demonstrated expert analytical skills and ability to prioritize assignments and manage busy work environment.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and must be able to work among a variety of clinical demands simultaneously. 
  • Must reflect a professional appearance and demeanor and possess excellent customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated competence with intermediate to advanced computer functions such as electronic medical record, Word, and Excel. 
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate in an effective and clear manner, the pertinent clinical issues to the team

Work Schedule

Appointment: 40 hours
Shift/Hours/Days: Days, variable hours; Monday – Friday.
Location: University Hospital - Cardiovascular Center; May work from home after 6-month orientation.
