Boston University invites applications from candidates for a full‐time Associate Clinical Professor position in its Criminal Law Clinical Program (the “Program”). The Program’s mission is to provide law students with the skills and knowledge needed to engage in zealous representation of indigent clients charged with misdemeanors and felonies at the district court level and juvenile court. BU Law students are court-appointed counsel in the Boston Municipal Court-Central Division and the Boston Juvenile Court. BU Law students represent clients from arraignment procedure to case resolution, including evidentiary hearings and trials. Working closely with the Program faculty, the Associate Clinical Professor will teach in the Program and supervise students engaged in direct representation of indigent clients. This search is for a non‐tenure track clinical professorial position with a projected start date of July 1, 2023.

The ideal candidate for this position is either an existing member of the Massachusetts bar or a member of another state’s bar who can waive into the Massachusetts bar. Also, the ideal candidate possesses at least three years of criminal defense experience, but candidates with fewer years’ experience could be considered. The hired faculty member will be responsible for offering effective instruction to students on litigating, research and writing, and the organization and management of cases. Teaching and supervision experience of varying kinds are preferred but are not required. Experience with cultural humility work is considered a plus. Familiarity with clinical pedagogy will also be valued.

Candidates should have proven trial experience and strong research and writing skills and should work well as part of a team.  Important qualities include a commitment to public interest lawyering, a commitment to combatting structural inequality, outstanding interpersonal skills, flexibility, a passion for criminal defense work, and an understanding of the structural forces that feed into the carceral system. The ability to work sensitively with a diverse population of clients, students, and staff is essential.
