The School of Speech, Language, Hearing, & Occupational Sciences (SLHOS) at the Universityof Montana (UM) is pleased to invite applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track faculty position of Clinical Assistant Professor to begin as early as summer 2024.

This Clinical Assistant Professor will join the rapidly growing School of Speech, Language, Hearing, & Occupational Sciences in the College of Health. In this position you will provide instruction for our undergraduate programs in Communicative Sciences & Disorders, as well as academic and clinical instruction, and clinical supervision for our graduate Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology. This position also includes service obligations to the School of Speech, Language, Hearing, & Occupational Sciences.

Position Details:

Non-Tenure Track Faculty: Speech, Language, Hearing, & Occupational Sciences.

Title: Clinical Assistant Professor.

Schedule: Full-time fiscal year (12-month) beginning summer 2024.

Entry Rate: $62,000 - $65,000 per year.

Required Qualifications:
  • National certification (i.e., ASHA’s Certificate of Clinical Competence) as a speech-language pathologist. Applicants must also be eligible for and obtain state licensure by the Montana Board of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists prior to instruction involving clinical supervision
  • Master of Science (MS) or Master of Arts (MA) degree or higher (e.g., clinical doctorate, PhD) in speech-language pathology awarded by an accredited institution (Council of Academic Accreditation of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology)
  • A minimum of two (2) years of documented experience in the field of communication disorders and sciences including two (2) years of clinical practice as a speech-language pathologist
  • A minimum of nine (9) months of full-time clinical experience (or the part-time equivalent) after earning the CCC-SLP; and a minimum of two (2) hours of professional development in the area of clinical instruction/supervision
  • Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and commitment to excellence in teaching and guiding students through clinical training experiences
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills including the ability to work with diverse populations
  • Ability to teach independently across our undergraduate programs and our graduate program in speech-language pathology
  • Ability to learn and apply new technologies in academic teaching and clinical instruction/supervision
  • Ability to collaborate with a variety of inter-professional colleagues in academic and clinical settings

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Evidence of academic teaching at the University level
  • Evidence of clinical supervision experience
  • Diverse experience of assessment and treatment of individuals with communication disorders across the lifespan; experience working with individuals of various ages, linguistic and cultural backgrounds, gender identities, etc.

Our vision is to be leaders in improving lives and connecting communities through dynamic research, teaching, and clinical practice.

The School of Speech, Language, Hearing, and Occupational Sciences (SLHOS) is accredited through the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology and offers the following programs: (1) a Ph.D. doctoral degree in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, (2) a Master of Science (MS) degree in Speech-Language Pathology, (3) a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communicative Sciences and Disorders, (4) a Post-baccalaureate Leveling Certificate, (5) and a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) Certificate. We are in the process of seeking accreditation candidacy for a new Occupational Therapy Doctoral (OTD) program through the Accreditation Council of Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) that is expected to launch by fall 2025.

SLHOS is currently comprised of 7 tenured/tenure-track faculty members, 7 non-tenure-track clinical faculty members, and a fluctuating roster of academic and clinical adjunct instructors. We have a vibrant student body including 4 doctoral students in Speech, Language, & Hearing Sciences, 70 Master of Science students in Speech-Language Pathology, and ~250 undergraduate students across the Bachelor of Arts, Post-Baccalaureate Leveling, and Speech-Language Pathology Assistant programs. SLHOS faculty deliver educational content via direct, campus-based course instruction, hybrid on-campus and synchronous online instruction, and asynchronous fully online instruction. We embrace innovative teaching methods, ensuring flexibility and accessibility for our diverse student body. Our commitment to excellence extends to our on-campus DeWit RiteCare Speech, Language, and Hearing Clinic, where faculty engage in innovative clinical training programs. We foster a collaborative environment, encouraging interprofessional training collaborations across campus, regional and international partnerships.

SLHOS is one of the Schools of the College of Health, which also houses Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Public Health, Social Work, Family Medicine Residency, and Integrative Physiology and Athletic Training. Faculty within the College also lead an innovative, campus-wide, interdisciplinary neuroscience program. Interdisciplinary clinical collaborations are highly valued and supported across these units, and campus-wide.
