Clinical Assistant Professor - Pediatric Dentistry
Primary Purpose and Essential Functions:
Reporting to the Chair of Pediatric Dentistry, the incumbent will be responsible for clinical teaching in pediatrics and Special Care, in outpatient and inpatient settings as part of an interdisciplinary team as well as didactic teaching to pre- and post-doctoral students as well as licensed dental and other health care providers.University of the Pacific recognizes that diversity, equity, and inclusion is foundational to the success of our valued students and employees. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• In the first two years of the program, responsibilities will primarily include clinical teaching to pre-doctoral dental students in the school's Hutto Patterson Pediatric Dental Clinic, Special Care Clinic and Community Outreach Clinics. The Special Care Clinic treats patients with moderate to severe medical, intellectual, developmental, and/or psychosocial conditions. Community partners care for underserved and disadvantaged pediatric populations and at-risk individuals, due to health, socioeconomic status, and/or significant physical or individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
• Teach students and residents from the UOP School of Pharmacy, Health Sciences and other Health Professions Students or in collaboration with other community partners.
• Work as part of an inter-disciplinary team and teach in inter-professional settings to dental students and students in other health professions within the scope of practice.
• Maintain and promote an environment of quality patient care and include learners in process of CQA (clinical quality assessment) and CQI (clinical quality improvement).
• Teach in a variety of formats to include lectures, seminars and clinic sessions; greater participation in didactic teaching will be expected after the initial two years.
• After the initial two years, development of some programs related to oral health care and dental education related to children and individuals with IDD will be expected.
• Over time, increased participation in service in the form of committees and other school and university events will be expected.
• Participation in school functions will be required during school hours and at other times as directed by the school administration or department chair.
• Build a body of work to meet criteria for promotion, including papers, original research, presentation at local and national meetings, grant writing and program development and implementation in addition to excellence in teaching and service.
• Assist in enhancing Interprofessional Education (IPE) and Practice (IPP) opportunities on, off and across campuses, including extramural rotations, in-class seminars, participation in the IPE Committee and community engagement.
• Content and expectations for the candidate within IPE and IPP curriculum include:
  • Awareness of pediatric and special needs populations who may be limited by economics, medical complications, or geographic circumstances and the ability to communicate these issues to students of diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Clinical efficiency and the ability to impart practical dental knowledge and aid students in increasing their clinical speed while facilitating expedient, efficient and excellent patient care.
  • Professional competence and self-confidence. Through rotations, it is expected that students will gain composure and self-confidence as they work closely with their preceptor faculty who also demonstrates these qualities.
  • Patient management. As each clinic is somewhat different site to site, students must develop the ability to think quickly and act appropriately in unfamiliar clinical environments and with a variety of patient populations. The successful candidate will facilitate this by continuous engagement on campus and with community partners to improve both the patient and student experiences during these rotations.
  • Perspective and understanding about the opportunities for dentists to reach patients who are often left out of the dental care system. The successful candidate can impart this information to students but may also use to develop future educational programs directed toward dental and other health care providers.
  • An opportunity to evaluate contemporary and emerging models of oral healthcare delivery, understand dentistry's role in the larger health care system and strive to reduce barriers to care. The successful candidate can impart this information to students but may also use it to develop future educational programs directed toward dental and other health care providers.
  • Collaboration with the inter-professional health care teams to improve oral-systemic health and model successful integration of oral health care within a variety of healthcare settings.
  • The incumbent may develop additional extramural rotation sites, models for delivery of care or improved outcomes in care, or other curriculum by working with the IPE Committee and other stakeholders in the final years of the loan repayment program.
  
  

Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge of:

• General and pediatric dentistry principles.
• Advanced course instruction.
• Advanced principles in care of children
• Advanced principles in care for children with complex IDD medical needs.
• Principles of pediatric dental practice management, including accepted and evidence-based behavior management, risk-based care practices, and business principles of practice management.
• Techniques, equipment used, and current developments in the field of dentistry.

Ability to:

• Demonstrate a wide range of clinical skills, be able to treatment plan and care appropriately for patients with a wide range of dental and medical needs, including the ability to treatment plan directly with patients as well as parent, guardians and surrogate decision makers.

Experience:

• Clinical and didactic instruction within a dental school.
• Working with children with IDD.
• Experience working with medically compromised children with IDD.
• Experience using an integrated Electronic Health Record.
• Collaboration within teams.
• Providing oral rehabilitation under general anesthesia

Education/Licenses:

• DDS/DMD degree
• Completion of a residency program in Pediatric Dentistry
• Current, active license to practice dentistry
• Valid CPR/BLS/PALS certification

Distinguishing Characteristics:

• Applicants must be able to demonstrate significant student loan debt and be eligible for the loan repayment program according to program guidelines established by HRSA, Federal, State and University criteria. All tax regulations related to loan repayment programs apply. The candidate will be responsible for payment of taxes related to loan repayment.

Working Conditions:

• Position is full-time, 4 days per week, Mondays-Thursdays negotiable.
• Requires attendance to weekend/evening events and meetings.
• Local or interstate travel to teach in community clinics may be required.
• Distant travel to present scholarly work may be required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to:

• Communicate effectively with administration, staff, students and public through oral and written communications.
• Serve as a liaison between Dugoni and community partners.
• Develop and deliver presentations.
• Analyze problems, provide solutions and implement recommendations.
• Prepare and present reports concisely and logically.
• Effectively manage projects and deadlines with close attention to detail.
• Work with minimal supervision.
• Display dedication to professional development in both clinical and teaching capacities.

Experience:

• One year GPR or AEGD preferred but not required

Education/Licenses:

• Board Certified from the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry
• Ability to gain and maintain trust and good relations with clients.
• Able to work effectively at all levels in a collaborative team environment.
• Places a high value on personal and departmental performance excellence.

Other:

• Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
• Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
• Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

• Clinical work performed is for healthy children and children with complex needs. This may require standing or stooping to provide care. The ability to participate in transferring patients from wheelchairs to a dental chair may be required.
• General office/administrative work required, including frequent use of computer keyboard and phone.
• Work may include standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time as well as bending or stooping to meet the patients needs.
• Ideal chair position and posture may not be attainable for extended periods of time when caring for patients with significant physical and intellectual disability.
• May require standing for periods of time when teaching in clinics or classrooms.
