Position Summary
The Indiana University School of Education in Indianapolis is seeking a Clinical Assistant Professor in Early Childhood Education to contribute to our progressive, urban teacher education programs. The ideal candidate should have expertise with teaching and scholarship of teaching strengths in early childhood education and literacy.
The School of Education is an urban-serving institution located in the heart of Indianapolis. Our School of Education has over 30 full time faculty, all of whom are actively engaged in teaching, scholarship of teaching, and research focused on urban education. Many of our faculty have scholarship interests that focus on social justice and anti-racist practices, partnerships with urban communities and schools, and critical perspectives in education. Responsibilities:

  • Serve as Program Coordinator for the Early Childhood Education Program. This role includes scheduling courses and instructors, coordinating student teaching placements, coordinating benchmark and accreditation assessments as well as leading ongoing program development, innovation, and evaluation.
  • Design and implement early childhood curriculum that ground pre-service teachers in deep understanding of critical social justice pedagogy, human development, social-emotional learning, and urban communities within strong field-based experiences.
  • Engage in scholarship of teaching.
  • Collaborate with faculty in the Urban Teacher Education programs to develop mutually beneficial partnerships with local schools and early childhood centers.
  • Lead or assist in ongoing program development, innovation, and evaluation.
  • Provide service to department, university, community, and professional organizations.

Basic Qualifications
  • Earned doctorate in Education or Child Development with emphasis in one or more of these areas: Early Childhood Education, Curriculum Studies, or Urban/Multicultural Education. (ABD candidates will be considered.)
  • Record of teaching and scholarship of teaching.
  • Curricular and instructional expertise in Culturally Relevant/Sustaining Pedagogy and other asset pedagogies.
  • Capacity to teach undergraduate and graduate early childhood education courses in teacher education programs.
  • Record of positive impact with youth in urban schools, universities, and/or communities.
  • Critical pedagogy and scholarship addressing issues of power, privilege and empowerment and the ways these issues affect children and communities

Additional Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A secondary area of expertise in literacy.
  • A minimum of three years of early childhood teaching experience (PK-3) in an urban setting.
  • Experience working with infants and toddlers, but also knowledge of children (birth to age five) in multiple contexts such as family child care, in home or center-based child care, Early Head Start/Head Start, and public school early childhood settings.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to urban issues.
  • Experience or interest in forming partnerships with urban schools to support prospective and practicing teachers in linguistically, culturally and economically diverse settings.
  • Experience or desire to work with diverse and/or underserved populations.
