Organizational Unit Overview
The Division of Hematology/Oncology at the East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine has a legacy of excellence in care and specialized expertise. It is a regional resource for eastern North Carolina and has assisted in the development of cancer programs in several outlying hospitals. Because of the complexity of these diseases and the rapid development of new therapies, multidisciplinary disease-oriented care is the division’s model. The division offers specialized programs in breast cancer, aerodigestive tract malignancy, melanoma, urologic malignancies, hematologic malignancies, benign hematology, and hemostasis.
On the inpatient service, a team approach is used which consists of staff physicians, a cancer nutritionist, cancer pharmacist, cancer program chaplain and specially trained nurses. The service offers not only the most current chemotherapy and biotherapy, but a comprehensive array of patient and family-oriented services including symptom management, pain control, family education, discharge planning, home care and (when needed) hospice care planning.
Outpatient services will be coordinated at the new ECU Health Cancer Center. This facility is adjacent to the Brody School of Medicine and ECU Health Medical Center. Nursing services are provided by oncology accredited nurses, and patients in the naturally lighted chemotherapy bay are assisted by case managers, pharmacists, and social workers. The Division of Hematology/Oncology is a major participant in clinical trials and is committed to the delivery of cutting-edge care to the residents of eastern North Carolina.
The Division of Hematology/Oncology offers a three-year combined ACGME-accredited Hematology/Oncology Fellowship with four new fellows per year. Clinics and inpatient hematology and solid tumor services are located in the new ECU Health Cancer Center. The Division also has a hospital wide Hematology and Oncology consulting service.
Fellows rotate through each of the inpatient services and each outpatient sub-specialty including Thoracic, Breast/Gynecologic, GI/GU/Melanoma/Sarcoma, and Malignant/Benign Hematology clinics every year under the direction of sub-specialty focused faculty. Inpatient rotation time is front loaded to the first year to provide a focus on the needed deeper learning and experience to be gained in becoming an oncologist during the second and third years of training. Allogeneic stem cell transplant training is at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Each fellow has more than six months of focused research time.
