The University of Houston Tillman J Fertitta Family College of Medicine (UHCOM) announces an Assistant or Associate Clinical Professor faculty position for a clinically prepared psychologist who is seeking a career in academic medicine. The responsibilities for this position include: teaching (45%), research (20%), academic service (10%), and clinical service in the UH Family Care Center (25%).
  
The appointment will be in the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences (DBSS) at UHCOM. DBSS includes faculty in psychology, psychiatry, social work, anthropology, medical ethics, public health and epidemiology. UHCOM is a new medical school that opened in August 2020. Its mission is to educate a diverse group of physicians who will provide compassionate, high value care to patients, families and communities. We seek to directly impact the health of our community. UHCOM leadership and faculty see biopsychosocial training and professional development of relationally oriented physicians as fundamental to our mission. DBSS provides a curriculum covering the full range of behavioral and social sciences knowledge, skills and attitudes; mental disorders; health behaviors; communication; teamwork; and wellness. We see the doctor-patient relationship as therapeutic and prepare our graduates to have meaningful, effective and satisfying interactions with patients. The curriculum is highly innovative with an emphasis on small group and active learning methods.  
 
UHCOM is a community-based medical school. The faculty psychologist will provide direct patient care in our Family Care Center that provides integrated primary and behavioral health care to the local community. The faculty psychologist should be capable of providing a generalist, evidence-based approach to evaluation and therapy, and highly interested in clinical teaching and supervision of trainees in medicine, psychology and social work.
Faculty are expected to engage in scholarly productivity and lead/participate in grant fund projects. In addition to behavioral and social sciences, UHCOM focuses on social determinants of health, health systems and population medicine. Together these bring a rich opportunity for curriculum development and health services research.  The University of Houston is a Carnegie Tier One Research University with more than 37,000 undergraduates.  Graduate clinical behavioral health training and innovative research are offered by departments of clinical psychology, educational psychology, and social work.  Research collaborations with all departments at UH is supported and encouraged.
 
This position reports directly to the James H. Bray, PhD, Chair of the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences. This is a non-tenure position at this time. In the near future, UHCOM expects to begin implementation of a tenure system.

Primary Responsibilities:
 
Educational/Research/Service Mission (75% Effort)
• Teach in the four-week Behavioral Medicine Course consisting of didactic and problem-based learning sessions.
• Teach in the problem-based learning sessions in the Physicians, Patients and Populations Course and Longitudinal Clinical Experiences.
• Provide clinical teaching and supervision of multiple trainees in psychology and medicine.
• Co-develop or lead advanced elective experiences.
• Serve on UHCOM educational committees.
• Publish scholarly research and lead and/or collaborate on grant applications. 
 
Direct Patient Care (25% Effort)
• Evaluate, treat, and consult on the behavioral health care of patients in the UHCOM Family Care Center.
• Supervise psychology graduate practicum students.
• Collaborate with other medical and behavioral health providers.
• Participate in community outreach activities.
Percent times are negotiable, if person selected is bringing funded projects to UHCOM.

Qualifications

: 
Minimum Qualifications
• Licensed or license eligible to practice psychology in the State of Texas
• Doctoral degree from an APA accredited clinical or counseling program
• Completion of required post-doctoral degree practice
• Experience and enthusiasm for teaching Gen Y and Gen Z learners.
• Experience teaching medical students and/or resident physicians
• Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of healthcare professionals
• Experience documenting with an electronic medical record
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office 

Preferred Qualifications:
• Direct experience developing curriculum
• Experience contributing to quality improvement projects
• Evidence of scholarly productivity and external grant applications
• Experience implementing evidence-based approaches to care
• Proficiency with an asynchronous learning platform 
• Scholarship and/or clinical expertise in mind-body related interventions including their application to enhance trainee wellness
• Bi-lingual in Spanish, Vietnamese, Arabic, or Chinese
