School/College/Division Description
The Faculty, Staff, and Students of Kinesiology Programs engage in the generation, dissemination, integration, and application of knowledge specific to human movement. Academic programs include BS Kinesiology, MS Kinesiology, PhD Kinesiology, and accelerated BS Kinesiology-MS Athletic Training degrees. The academic programs partner with other academic units on campus to offer Sport & Recreation classes, Certificates in Complementary and Integrative Health Approaches and Applied Gerontology at the undergraduate level and Interprofessional Public and Population Health at the graduate level.
The B.S. Kinesiology program, with over 320 majors, is a multidisciplinary program focused on the science of human movement. The program offers foundational coursework in human anatomy and physiology, health and fitness, and statistical analyses. Kinesiology core coursework covers exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor behavior, psychological aspects of sport and exercise, ethics, and sociological aspects of health and human movement. Students have the option of completing internship hours to obtain field experience as well as advanced coursework in more specialized areas such as strength and conditioning and clinical exercise physiology. About half of UWM Kinesiology majors are interested in professions, such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and athletic training, and about half are interested in applied careers, such as personal training, health coaching, and strength and conditioning.
The accredited Zilber College of Public Health offers pre-professional, professional, and research-focused degrees and enrolls nearly 700 students across more than 20 degree and certificate programs including Kinesiology, Nutritional Sciences, Biostatistics, Community and Behavioral Health Promotion, Environmental Health, Epidemiology, Health Informatics, and Public Health Policy. The college has 26 tenured or tenure-track faculty and 11 instructional academic staff. The Zilber College of Public Health with the College of Health Professions and Sciences, and the College of Community Engagement and Professions have formed Partners for Health, a research and inter-professional collaborative.
