Position Overview
The Program of Exercise Science at Marquette University is seeking an assistant professor to join our participating faculty in the fall of 2024. We are excited to expand our faculty to meet the high demand for our graduate program in Sports and Exercise Analytics. We therefore invite applications for a full-time participating assistant professor position (9 or 12-month, non-tenure-track). Contracts are renewable based on satisfactory progress annually. At five years of employment, this new role comes with eligibility for a 3-year contract renewable (based on satisfactory progress) and opportunities for promotion and progression in rank. Salary is commensurate with experience.
Marquette University is a prominent research institution that places significant value on teaching, research, and service. Our successful undergraduate major in exercise science directly feeds into the physical therapy doctoral program, as well as other professional and graduate programs. The recently introduced MS degree in Sports and Exercise Analytics is a rapidly growing program within our department. All programs are housed within the Department of Physical Therapy in the College of Health Sciences.
This new position will involve collaboration with all faculty within the Department of Physical Therapy and Marquette Athletics. The role will involve teaching diverse groups of undergraduate, graduate, and professional students during the fall and spring semesters, with additional opportunities during the summer. Classes are typically delivered in a standard semester format (fall/spring), with shorter 6 or 10-week summer sessions. The successful candidate will report to the Director of Exercise Science. Clinical faculty members play an integral role in program and university governance, which includes academic advising, student recruitment, and service to the university, community, and applicants’ profession.
Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will contribute to our academic programs by teaching undergraduate classes and labs in strength & conditioning, as well as graduate classes within the MS in Sports and Exercise Analytics program. In addition, they will serve as a mentor to graduate students, guiding them on sports science related projects, and contributing to the department’s mission through applied scholarly work in the field of sport science.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
A PhD in Exercise Science or related field or in lieu of a PhD a MS with extensive experience (minimum of 5 yrs) in: Industry experience (e.g., with companies, professional sports organizations) or Translational work with athletes and coaches across a range of performance settings.
Professional certification (e.g., CSCS or CPSS)
Record of, or demonstrated potential for, carrying out applied and collaborative sport science projects in a university athletics-type setting.
Ability to effectively teach undergraduate classes and labs in strength & conditioning.
Ability to effectively teach graduate classes as part of the MS Sports and Exercise Analytics program (SPRT).
Ability to mentor graduate students on sports science/analytics related projects.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate with colleagues, students, and internal/external partners/stakeholders.
Demonstrated proficiency with programming and statistical learning methods in academic or professional settings.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
College teaching experience.
Post-PhD professional experience, such as: Postdoctoral training in sport science related field
Industry experience (e.g., with companies, professional sports organizations)
Translational work with athletes and coaches across a range of performance settings
