Clinical Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice, Jazz Bands

Principal Duties

Purdue University’s Department of Bands and Orchestras is seeking a band director for an academic year appointment at the clinical assistant/associate professor level.  The successful candidate will serve as the head of the Purdue jazz band program.  This includes oversight of the entire Jazz Band program in the department, including full responsibility for the coordination of all jazz band courses and curriculum.  Full responsibility for the coordination of jazz band auditions throughout the academic year and in the summer. Additional summer responsibilities may include instruction with a summer jazz ensemble. Serve as a conductor of at least 3 jazz ensembles, during the fall and spring semesters. This includes serving as the principal conductor of the Purdue Jazz Band. Responsible for planning and carrying out of the daily operation of the assigned ensemble(s), music preparation and instruction, and concert planning and coordination. Serve as coordinator of the annual Purdue Jazz Festival, including full organizational and operational responsibility for the event. Play a significant role in student recruitment and alumni outreach in cooperation with departmental public relations director.

 

 

 


Qualifications

 

Candidates for this position will possess a solid jazz band conducting background. The minimum requirement is a master’s degree with at least one degree in music education, doctorate preferred.  Degree must be completed at time of appointment. Knowledge and background of large ensemble/jazz combo conducting, and rehearsal experience is required.  A minimum of three years of public school and/or college teaching experience preferred. The ability to effectively communicate with students, peers, and alumni is an important aspect of this position.
