Description

The Writing Program at NYU Shanghai invites applications for multiple full-time continuing contract faculty positions to teach writing core curriculum courses and electives to academically outstanding students from around the world. We welcome applications from prospective faculty at all levels, ranging from those in the early phases of their academic careers to those with an established record of full-time teaching experience and service at accredited post-secondary institutions.

We encourage applicants from diverse disciplines, especially those able to teach Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC), scientific and technical writing, writing in the social sciences, writing studies, and journalism. In addition, we value applicants with a commitment to and/or experience with multilingual pedagogies. 

Candidates must have completed a terminal degree by August 2024. Typical appointments consist of 3-year (Clinical Assistant Professor) and 5-year (Clinical Associate and Full Professor) terms. Candidates’ teaching strength and service records will weigh most importantly in the application process, though an active research profile is appreciated.

Writing Program Clinical Assistant Professors teach six sections (or their equivalent) of introductory and/or intermediate writing courses (three sections/semester). Promotion to Clinical Associate Professor and Clinical Professor includes reduced course loads and higher service expectations. Courses are capped at 16 but generally enroll 12 students per section. Writing faculty participate in faculty development workshops, engage in institutional service, and may continue ongoing research and practice in their academic or creative fields. Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• PhD, EdD, JD, or other terminal degree; 

• Two years teaching university-level composition or other writing intensive courses as the instructor of record; 

• Evidence of excellence in university-level teaching.

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Three years or more teaching university-level composition or other writing-intensive courses as the instructor of record; 

• Expertise in all disciplines is welcome, especially in one or more of the following areas: writing and rhetoric studies, science and technical writing, social sciences writing, multilingual writing, digital cultures, WAC/WID, Asian and Asian-American cultures or studies,  and writing program administration; 

• Experience working with students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

• Three letters of recommendation; at least one letter should speak to your teaching experience and effectiveness 

• Proposal for a Perspectives on the Humanities course, based on your background. Please model your proposal on these sample course catalog descriptions, and limit it to 300 words or fewer.

Candidates who move forward to the interview stage may be asked to provide supplemental application materials, such as

• A teaching portfolio containing a syllabus, a major writing assignment prompt, and sample student writing with instructor feedback

• Course evaluation reports and reflections
