Scope of Position

The Digital Pathology Program utilizes high-throughput automated scanners to capture slide images, which are viewed digitally through utilization of imaging software.  The digital images are interpreted by a pathologist, and findings are utilized to support diagnosis for patient care, clinical trials, and research activities. The Digital Processing Tech will be responsible for all pre and post analytical steps involved in digitizing Surgical Pathology slides received from OSUWMC patients and outside clients. This includes imaging of microscopic slides, distribution of slides, and quality assurance of images, data review of errors, as well as equipment knowledge and troubleshooting for end to end digital pathology workflows.

Position Summary:  

The Student Digital Processing Technician provides high quality customer service for the Digital Pathology Program. This position involves the preparation and processing of microscopy slides for scanning, directing of materials to the appropriate pathologists and other pathology personnel, as well as responds to requests for diagnostic pathology specimens from OSUWMC patients and outside clients. The Student Digital Processing Technician will utilizing Beaker and the digital informatics software for tracking various stages of completion. The Student Digital Processing Technician will assist with the downloading of digital images into a library collection, the extracting of digital images from the library to an upload site and/or encrypted hard drive and provide support for the programs various other research and development projects. This position does interact with pathologists and collaborates with other pathology services i.e. Histology, Surgical Pathology, and IHC on a daily basis.   The Student Digital Processing Technician reports to the Manager of Pathology Support Services and takes direction from the Clinical Supervisor.

Duties and Responsibilities

60% - Process and Prepares Specimens

  • Performs general phone answering duties such as providing advice on appropriate specimen requests and submissions
  • Uses problem solving skills to resolve concerns
  • Utilizes technology to enter specimen requests to produce a specimen pull lists utilized  in the specimen retrieval process
  • Records problems concerning specimen requests, specimen tracking, specimen transport
  • Follows protocols as it pertains to the need for slide needing recoverslip or recut slides
  • Communicates laboratory problems/issues to Clinical Supervisor, Manager or other Departmental Leadership
  • Communicates with pathology department leadership as it pertains to reconcile process related issues.
  • Ensures specimens are labeled correctly by using extreme attention to detail and meticulous review
  • Tracks requests through various stages of progression by utilizing internal documentation and tracking mechanisms
  • Prepares microscopy slides for scanning : cleaning, relabeling, and performing quality checks
  • Loads/unloads slides into racks for scanning
  • Preforms quality assurance evaluation on scanned images
  • Performs maintenance and troubleshooting on digital scanners as needed.

30%    Packaging, Downloading and Transports Slids/Images

  • Retrieves specimens according to established policy/procedure
  • Receives and sends specimens via laboratory courier or internal transport
  • Ensures that slides are properly organized and packed for transport
  • Tracks and delivers glass slides and materials to appropriate locations before and after scanning; including pathologist mailboxes and other departmental offices.
  • Downloads images from the Image Management System in to the library
  • Extracts images from the library and copies to an upload site and/or encrypted hard drive for outside affiliates

10% - Miscellaneous Duties

  • Participates in education activities; attends in-services with the division; participates in CE programs within and/or outside the OSU Medical Center.
  • Maintains documentation
  • Keeps all areas of the work environment clean, stocked and maintained
  • Participates in necessary and assigned QC/QM programs including documentation.
  • Maintains proper supply inventory and notifies Manager and/or Clinical Supervisor of orders as needed
  • Requests equipment repairs as needed.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

For Hire:   High school education required; Associates degree or higher preferred in medical laboratory technology or biological science or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Ongoing:   Meets minimum continuing education requirements; meets health surveillance requirements. Demonstrates competence in technical, interpersonal and cognitive skills required to meet essential job functions.
