Summary of Duties:

The College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resources Sciences (CAHNRS) seeks internal candidates for the Clif Bar & King Arthur Flour Endowed Chair for Organic Grain Breeding & Innovation. The Chair is dedicated to the science and practice of plant breeding, specifically grains for organic cropping systems and climate-resilient farming practices. The work of the Chair through the WSU Breadlab has been recognized internationally as leading movements of an innovative and equitable approach to breeding grains that are nutrition forward while not sacrificing yield.

The Chair is expected to lead regional plant breeding for development of new and novel varieties intended for the public good, train graduate students and research associates in plant breeding, leverage funds from the Endowment to expand and enhance research, education, and extension activities by generating external grants and funding, complement and collaborate with existing research, teaching, and Extension programs at WSU and across the country, and work closely with donors and partners to identify priorities for fund use.

The Clif Bar & King Arthur Flour Endowed Chair for Organic Grain Breeding & Innovation will be appointed on an initial four-year term basis, beginning July 1, 2024, with consideration of extension of the appointment following satisfactory performance.

This Endowed Chair is affiliated with WSU Breadlab, located in Burlington, WA. The Chair position will continue to develop the relationships the Breadlab has established with farmers, millers, maltsters and bakers in the Pacific Northwest for the advancement of soil health, farm profitability, bio-diversity, nutrition, sustainability and taste without sacrificing profitability or affordability.

Required Qualifications - Associate Rank:

  • A PhD degree in plant breeding or a related field; and at least 6 years' experience as an assistant professor or equivalent.

  • Demonstrated record of scholarly accomplishments in research, extension, and/or teaching commensurate with career level within the field of plant breeding (or a closely related field).

Required Qualifications - Professor Rank:

  • A PhD degree in plant breeding or a related field; and at least 6 years' experience as an Associate Professor or equivalent.

  • A Professor is required to have a national or international reputation in his or her field.

  • Demonstrated record of scholarly accomplishments in research, extension, and/or teaching commensurate with career level within the field of plant breeding (or a closely related field).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in organic or sustainable cropping systems.

  • Experience in breeding cereal crops.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate (oral, written, and electronic) effectively with technical and nontechnical audiences.

  • Demonstrated record of or capacity to acquire and/or manage extramural competitive grant support.

  • Ability or capacity to teach/mentor undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Ability to work effectively with interdisciplinary teams and stakeholders.

Annual Salary:

$100,000 - $200,000 | In accordance with RCW 49.58.110 , the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
