Description of Work
UNL is committed to creating a campus free from discrimination and harassment. The Civil Rights Investigator will play an important role in the university’s education, prevention and response efforts pursuant to Title VII, Title VI, Title IX and related statutes. The Civil Rights Investigator will report to the Title IX Coordinator and the Associate to the Chancellor for Institutional Equity and Compliance. The Civil Rights Investigator will assist with, among other duties: creation and implementation of policies and procedures; education and training for the university community; and investigation of discrimination and harassment complaints.

Minimum Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in relevant discipline.
Two (2) years of demonstrated work experience:
  • Understanding of civil rights statutes and due process as part of employment, educational programs, or student conduct resolution;
  • Conducting investigations in which individuals are interviewed and information is assessed for relevancy. Applicant should be able to identify and raise discrepancies in information obtained, and explain a sequential and structured process to parties involved;
  • Maintaining neutrality throughout investigations or resolution processes;
  • Drafting organized and well-written technical documents (a writing sample may be required);
  • Securing sensitive and confidential information;
  • Building rapport and trust with supervisors and co-workers;
  • Taking initiative to complete projects and improve departmental workflows, procedures, and practices; and
  • Communicating effectively with others (supervisors, co-workers, collaborators, etc.)

Applicants might have acquired this experience working in human resource management, regulatory compliance, student conduct, law enforcement, litigation, or a related occupation/profession.
Preferred Qualifications
Graduate or professional degree (MA, MS, MPA, MLS, MBA, MEd, JD, EdD, PhD) in a related field (Criminal Justice, Human Resources, Educational Administration, Public Administration, etc.)
More than two (2) years of demonstrated work experience identified under the minimum qualifications, and:
  • Experience working in or with an institution of higher education (IHE) or high school or government agency.
  • Experience at a public IHE is desirable.
  • Experience working with diverse populations that have produced an understanding of the lived experiences of marginalized/underrepresented individuals.
  • Experience serving international students, scholars, or employees.
