Ohio State’s Facilities Design and Construction (FDC) oversees campus design, construction, and renovation projects; engineering support services; and building design and sustainability standards.

FDC includes four project delivery teams: Wexner Medical Center/Health Sciences, Academic and Administration, Auxiliaries and Regionals, and Engineering & Infrastructure. These teams lead design and construction projects for campus, the medical center, core campus, regional campuses, and auxiliary buildings. GIS and Surveying group within the Engineering Support Team provides a critical role in providing highly technical engineering and architectural support to all university units.

Civil Engineering Specialist - Geomatics Engineer: This position supports campus maintenance and construction projects. The position collects surveys of campus utility installations for integration into the campus utility GIS. It also provides utility marking services in accordance with Ohio Utility Protection Services (OUPS) standards to all construction projects, maintenance, and special events, as needed across campus.

While performing survey duties the Geomatics Engineer works with all departments within the university, construction contractors and outside architecture and engineering firms to compile utility location data via surveying methods to support the campus utility GIS. Data collection is accomplished with modern survey equipment such as levels, robotic total stations, geographic positioning system (GPS) devices, laser scanning equipment, and various other survey grade data collection devices. The Geomatic Engineer determines the proper equipment and best methods to deliver the desired level of accuracy survey data. The Geomatic Engineer researches the GIS, existing survey records, drawings, and maps to compile the data required for survey and utility marking projects. The Geomatic Engineer assists in the updating of GIS by providing context to the survey data collected from field observations and field data collection.

While performing utility locating duties the Geomatics Engineer works with all necessary departments within the university, construction contractors and outside architecture and engineering firms to complete utility marking requests. This position coordinates with all contractors and project sites to ensure accurate and timely markings for all construction/maintenance projects on campus that may disturb underground utilities. The Geomatic Engineer marks all university maintained utilities using the campus GIS data, archived maps and 
plans, engineering plans, and other drawings and forms of data that assist in the location of university owned utilities.

The Geomatic Engineer, to maintain business continuity, assists in documenting and maintaining of office standard operating procedures. This position assists in managing the utility locating request in the university's OUPS ticket management system. Additionally, the position assists in the evaluation of equipment and software used for utility marking, surveying, and GIS work. To maintain operational readiness the Geomatics Engineer assists in the maintenance and serviceability of all related survey and marking equipment.

The ideal candidate will have an eye for detail, be team oriented, and be an excellent communicator. They will be a highly motivated individual that can exercise independent judgment, discretion and deal with problems involving several variables and solve problems.

Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree in Geomatics, Surveying, Civil Engineering, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
Minimum of 2 years' experience in surveying or a closely-related field required. 2-4 years of relevant experience (preferred).


  • Motor vehicle operation

  • Ability to enter and exit confined spaces

  • Technical proficiency with survey equipment and techniques

  • Technical proficiency with utility locating tools and equipment

  • Computer skills basic knowledge of GIS or CAD software

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Works well with a diverse population and can develop effective working relationships with others

  • Strong attention to detail, deals with problems involving several variables and problem-solving skills

  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment


 


Additional Information:

The targeted hiring range for this position is $58,100- $77,450 annually, commensurate with education and experience.
