Description of Work Unit
Colorado State University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is seeking a full-time undergraduate advisor. Civil and Environmental Engineering comprises approximately 35 faculty, 600 undergraduate students and 200 graduate students. The undergraduate advisor position reports directly to the department head, but for the first 6-12 months in the position, daily direction and training will be provided by another departmental professional academic advisor. The advising staff will work closely together with the department head to support the undergraduate student population through advising and a variety of programs designed to assist students in developing academic plans, making critical transitions, and connecting with campus resources. Position Summary
The selected individual will work closely with undergraduate students in advising/recommending academic requirements, scheduling of classes, and developing plans for academic success. The Academic Advisor will also communicate with the office of Registrar in evaluating transfer/graduating student’s credentials. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, working with the teaching/class scheduling, and textbook ordering for the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, serving on department, college and university committees as needed, assisting with university and college events such as Ram Welcome, Commencement, Ram Orientation, and Engineering recruitment events, and processing documents related to graduation, overrides, exceptions, appeals, study abroad, military, athletics, and other advising related issues while in accordance with Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) and Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) guidelines.
Required Job Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Development, Psychology, Counseling, Student Affairs or related human-studies content area;
- 3 years of experience advising, counseling, and/or providing academic program oversight and academic support for students;
- demonstrated experience with advising students in a one-on-one setting;
- proven ability to coordinate multiple projects effectively and efficiently;
- proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel
- excellent organizational and communication skills (written, verbal, interpersonal, and public speaking); and
- demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.
Preferred Job Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in any area plus a Master’s degree in Human Development, Psychology, Counseling, Student Affairs, Higher Education or related human/educational content area;
- demonstrated ability in designing, implementing, collaborating, and supervising programs;
- demonstrated experience developing and heading intervention strategies for supporting the academic success of students;
- ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment while exhibiting flexibility, strong work ethic, patience and creativity;
- demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team;
- experience with Oracle, Banner, and Navigate software systems; and
- proficiency in Microsoft Access.

- Will be cognizant of current departmental, university, college, and ABET
(Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) requirements necessary for undergraduate students to obtain their Civil or Environmental Engineering degrees;
- Advise current and prospective students on academic requirements, scheduling of classes, semester-to-semester academic path, and administrative procedures related to academics;
- Advise students on review of transfer evaluation of coursework and clarify and recommend any needed reevaluations;
- Assist students to develop plans to improve GPA and overcome academic difficulties;
- Process documents related to graduation, overrides, exceptions, appeals, study abroad, military, athletics, and other advising related issues;
- Work within FERPA guidelines;
- Maintain and disseminate advising related information to prospective, current, and former students;
- Evaluate credentials for graduating seniors to determine if departmental, university and ABET
requirements have been met;
- Communicate with the Registrar, as needed while supporting students;
- Maintain knowledge of Colorado State University campus resources, information systems, and university, college, and departmental policies and procedures;
- Act as a positive representative for the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and a positive role model for students;
- Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with CSU cultural centers, academic departments, program coordinators, student groups, and university resources;
- Conduct tracking of student progress and proactive outreach in support of students; and
- Document appointment notes.

- Assist with administrative support for the curriculum course and program changes in order to have positive influence on the process;
- Help maintain accurate and current information on the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department website;
- Accurately contribute to departmental records, spreadsheets and databases related to the undergraduate program and students;
- Act as a resource for faculty in the department;
- Serve on department, college and university committees as needed;
- Assess undergraduate program for quality improvements;
- Assist with student survey administration and assess data; and
- Additional responsibilities as determined by departmental needs.

- Meet with prospective students and families;
- Facilitate faculty-to-student interactions;

- Assist with outreach to Colorado Community Colleges and area high schools.
