Job Description


Virginia Tech’s Blacksburg campus has a chilled water infrastructure encompassing a mix of over 50 water-cooled centrifugal and air-cooled chillers with more than 30k tons of cooling capacity distributed in two central plants connected with ~4 miles of pipe along with several small district systems and multiple single building installations. The distribution system in the central loop moves more than 2 million gallons of water across most of campus. All chilled water operations are automated with an enterprise control system.

Virginia Tech is seeking a full time Chilled Water Technician reporting to the Chilled Water Supervisor, the technician performs daily duties in the operation, maintenance, and repair of automated central campus plants, district plants, and distributed chilled water systems to include water- and air-cooled chillers, cooling towers, pumps, controls.


Required Qualifications

Experience with the operation, maintenance, installation and repair of mechanical systems. | Working knowledge of computer-based building control systems. | Must possess a valid driver's license. | Due to emergency call-in requirements, you must be able to arrive on campus within one hour. | Ability to safely move and handle heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds or more; climb and work from elevated workstations such as ladders and scaffolds; maneuver and work in tight spaces; and work for considerable periods of time standing, sitting, walking, reaching, bending, pushing/pulling, and doing repetitive movement with tools, equipment and computer keyboarding. | Must have excellent communication skills, good teamwork skills, and be able to understand, comprehend and follow directions in the workplace. | Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions, including extreme temperatures. | May be required to work additional hours/shifts to meet the needs of the department. | This is a designated emergency personnel position.


Preferred Qualifications

Considerable experience with the operation, maintenance, installation and repair of chilled water systems. | Experience planning, leading, directing, or managing mechanical installation projects. | Current Virginia Journeyman or Masters HVAC and/or Electrical Certification. | Working knowledge of computer-based building control systems. | EPA Universal Refrigeration Certification. | Technical training and experience in air conditioning and refrigeration. | Experience and training in the operation of chillers, cooling towers, water treatment chemicals, chilled water systems and HVAC building automated controls. | Associate degree in Electronics, Building Automation, or directly related field, or an equivalent level of training and or experience.


Salary Information

$55,000-$75,000
