Position Overview

Child Care Assistants contribute to the success of the PAIR Project by removing practical barriers to participating in research and by enhancing participants’ experience during research appointments.  The PAIR Project’s Part-Time Child Care Assistants will be responsible for the supervision and safety of child research participants, their siblings, and other children while the caregiver is participating in research-related tasks. Child Care Assistants will monitor and interact with the children in playing games and activities, and ensure the general health and well-being of each child. Children range in age from infants to adolescents. Child Care Assistants will also assist and support Graduate Research Assistants in the setup and cleanup of data collection materials.

This position’s hours are on an on-call basis not to exceed 20 hours per week. Primary on-call days are Saturdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays between 8 am and 5 pm.

Job Description

75% - monitoring, supervising, and interacting with children during research appointments. These Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, maintaining a safe and clean environment for children of varying ages, communicating effectively with participants and PAIR Project staff, reporting any injuries and/or damage of property during research appointments to PAIR Project staff, and engaging children in age-appropriate activities.

20% -communicating with Research Aides regarding childcare-related tasks, implementing childcare procedures, and regularly reporting to the PAIR Project staff about childcare events and experiences.

5%  - Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • At least one year of child care experience in an organizational setting.
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Reliable transportation to travel to and from research appointments in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
  • Valid driver's license by time of appointment.
  • Successfully pass a TB test and criminal background check.
  • Ability to physically interact with children, including bending, kneeling, sitting on the floor and lifting up to 40 pounds either with or without accommodation.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous training in child development.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills as demonstrated by application materials.
  • CPR training.
  • First Aid training.
