Orange Coast College (OCC) is seeking equity-minded individuals for a classified employee role as a Child Care Assistant under the Student Services Wing, as part of the Harry & Grace Steele Children's Center.

The Center has been serving student-parents with quality Early Care and Education of young children for 40 years. The Associated Students conceived the idea for campus childcare and has supported this endeavor on many levels throughout our history. The OCC Harry and Grace Steele Children's Center is part of campus Student Services with the primary goal of providing a comprehensive Early Care and Education program serving the families of student-parents, faculty/staff, and the community. The Center strives to promote a balance between healthy family living and academic/career success. In creating this balance, parents grow to understand and develop their role in the life of their growing child(ren) while striving to maintain productivity in the outside world. Our role is to provide the time and structural support to assist students, faculty, staff, and community members in achieving their goals or experiencing an enriched campus life that includes the pursuit of leadership opportunities and serving families through positive modeling, parent enrichment, and ongoing support. The Center has a long history of excellence in providing quality child care to families in the Orange Coast area and will continue this tradition in future years to come. 
Summary 
Assists in providing care for infant to preschool-aged children and assistance at a facility that serves as an emergent program, challenging children to think critically and become engaged in the process of learning. Assists with providing age-appropriate child-centered development and functioning exercises, for infant to preschool-aged children. While care is custodial in nature, incumbents are required to facilitate developmental exercises, parenting instruction, and may perform limited medical procedures.
 
Distinguishing Career Features 
The Child Care Assistant is responsible for accommodating the needs of children in activities from training in creative arts, playing habits, socialization, and motor skills. Advancement beyond this position may be possible with additional coursework in early childhood education that satisfies the requirements for the position and complies with the state’s permit matrix.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Specific duties may vary among departments, divisions and jobs. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following types of duties, as assigned:
  • Assists lead teacher in planning and coordinating children's programs of activities with appropriate management. Assists in maintaining order by observing and focusing the activities and behaviors of the children in group activities.
  • Assumes responsibilities for groups of infants, toddlers, or preschool.  
  • Maintains health and safety standards per OSHA regulations, Title 22, and Title 5 such as but not limited to hygiene, handwashing, nutrition.
  • Prepares materials for daily play and basic learning or Children's Center activities such as but not limited to developmentally appropriate activities, gardening, animal care, and children's interests.
  • Performs light housekeeping and child maintenance duties such as but not limited to cleaning, disinfecting, washing, sanitizing toys, surfaces, mats, cribs, bedding.
  • Participates in staff meetings, program activities, and in-service training.
  • Maintains required records on children, to include anecdotal records, observations, and written developmental summaries, as appropriate.
  • Develops positive relationships with parents and staff. Maintains a professional work environment.  Maintains confidentiality of private information processed or received during the course of performing assigned duties
  • Facilitates in daily lunch program and snack program for children ages 6 months to 6 years old, such as, but not limited to participate in the child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and ensure compliance.
  • May direct and/or assigns duties to support staff, volunteers, and observers.  
  • Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.
  • Required to abide by all District policies and procedures including Board Policy 3050 – Code of Professional Ethics.

Knowledge and Skills 


  • The position requires a basic knowledge of child guidance principles and practices and an understanding of the goals and objectives of a preschool-aged child care program in a school district environment.  

  • Requires working knowledge of learning exercises and approaches that are appropriate for student parents.  

  • Requires working knowledge of the needs and behavior of preschool-aged children. 

  • Requires working knowledge of proper sanitization and sterilization methods, as well as cleaning materials and disinfectants.  

  • Requires sufficient human relations skills to interact with student parents, children, and staff.

Abilities 

  • Requires the ability to perform the essential responsibilities and functions of the position.  

  • Requires the ability to understand and interpret a teacher’s instructions in order to assist in instruction-oriented recreation activities of infant children and learning exercises for student parents.  

  • Requires the ability to understand the needs and differences of children and to reach and engage them in play.  

  • Requires the ability to balance emotional support and discipline to deal with behavior problems in student parents.  

  • Requires the ability to demonstrate sensitivity to the dynamics of teen parenting.

Physical Abilities 

  • The general physical demands, working conditions, and essential job functions associated with this classification will be kept on file with the Office of Human Resources.

Education and Experience and demonstrated evidence of D.E.I.A (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Access):  :

  • The position requires the equivalent of a high school diploma. Experience working with infants, toddlers, or preschool children or equivalent environments and successful completion of minimum childcare licensing standards.

  • Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required equivalent qualifications for the position.
AND
  • Demonstrated evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.

Licenses and Certificates:


  • 12-semester post-secondary units or equivalent quarter units in early childhood education or child development completed at an accredited or approved college or university, and at least six months of work experience in a licensed daycare center or comparable group child care program; OR 

  • At least 6 semester units as described above and agree to be enrolled in at least 2 units each semester until the 12-unit requirements are met; OR 

  • Possession of a Children's Center permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Preparation and Licensing.

  • Possession of, or eligibility for, a Pediatric Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate.

  • Possession of, or eligibility for a valid Pediatric First Aid Certificate issued by an approved agency (i.e. American Red Cross, American Heart Association, National Safety Council).

  • May require a first-aid certificate.

  • May require a valid driver's license.

Additional Requirements  


  • Current Tuberculosis (TB) test.  

  • Physical examination. 

  • Fingerprint check through appropriate agencies such as the Department of Justice (DOJ).  

  • Show proof of immunization against influenza, pertussis, and measles.  

    • If a person meets all other requirements for employment but needs additional time to obtain and provide his or her immunization records, the person may be employed conditionally for a maximum of 30 days upon signing and submitting a written statement attesting that he or she has been immunized as required. A person is exempt from the requirements of immunization against influenza, pertussis, and measles only under any of the following circumstances:

      • The person submits a written statement from a licensed physician declaring that because of the person's physical condition or medical circumstances, immunization is not safe.  

      • The person submits a written statement from a licensed physician providing that the person has evidence of current immunity to the diseases described.

      • The person submits a written declaration that he or she has declined the influenza vaccination.  This exemption applies only to the influenza vaccine.

  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors with minimal safety hazards, yet some exposure to communicable diseases.

(IN-HOUSE ONLY) This is a temporary contract, categorically-funded, full-time, 12-months per year classified position.  The District reserves the right to extend, modify, or eliminate this position based upon available funds.  The normal hours of work will be Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with the flexibility to occasionally work extended hours and/or weekends, if necessary, to meet the department's needs.  The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee.   
 
(Salary Schedule:  EE-109)
