Chief, Pediatric Urology

The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and Children's Wisconsin (CW) are seeking a visionary, innovative, and scholarly leader to serve as Chief, Division of Pediatric Urology, Department of Urology. The Chief will lead one of the busiest pediatric urologic programs in the US with existing strengths in the field of complex urologic reconstruction, fetal urology, robotic surgery, differences of sexual development, and nephrolithiasis. 

The ideal candidate will be a transformational leader committed to diversity, as well as an excellent collaborator with clinicians, scientists, and organizational leaders.  The candidate will ideally be experienced in surgical management and long-term care in complex pediatric urology and elevate an already strong and cohesive group of pediatric urologists.  Additionally, the ideal candidate will:

• Set vision and strategy to steer the program through programmatic excellence in alignment with the clinical, research, education, and community engagement missions of CW, Children’s Specialty Group, and MCW
• Nurture a culture of inclusion, accountability, and professionalism across the enterprise
• Responsibly administer the Division’s finances
• Successfully recruit and retain diverse, talented faculty, and foster their career development
• Provide the leadership to achieve superior clinical programs within the Division of Pediatric Urology
• Develop and support research and education by working with the Department of Urology and the Children's Research Institute to maximize resources
• Establish strong collaborations with regional healthcare systems and national leaders to ensure that the urological clinical programs are unsurpassed in this region and among the most excellent clinical programs nationally as evidenced by quality metrics, national benchmarks, and clinical volumes

Division of Pediatric Urology

Children's Wisconsin Pediatric Urology emerged with full-time, fellowship trained faculty in the early 1980's, and now consists of 4 full-time faculty and 4 advanced practice providers.  The pediatric practice serves patients locally and across the State of Wisconsin, including outreach practices in Kenosha, Appleton, Green Bay, and Marshfield. In 2022, the Pediatric Urology team provided care to 10,083 patients in the ambulatory clinics and performed 1,505 surgeries.  The program is well-recognized and continues to grow, including in geographic scope, by providing care to patients from 15 states in 2022.  The Division of Pediatric Urology is currently led by John Kryger, MD, who has served as the Division Chief since 2012.  Dr. Kryger also serves as the Children’s Wisconsin Medical Director of Outreach Services in Central Wisconsin. Dr. Kryger is stepping down from his leadership position as Division Chief as part of his thoughtful succession plan but will remain engaged in complex urologic reconstructive surgery as a full-time member of the pediatric urology faculty.

Pediatric Research/ Quality Improvement

Research within the Department is focused primarily on clinical trials and outcomes research.  In Pediatric Urology, we have two full time pediatric urology research coordinators to support these endeavors.  Areas of interest include:

• Testicular tissue cryopreservation for pediatric Onco-fertility program
• Pediatric nephrolithiasis
• Pediatric neurogenic bladder
• Hypospadias outcomes
• Opioid stewardship
• Multi-Institutional Bladder Exstrophy Consortium (MIBEC)
• Sacral neuro-modulation for bladder and fecal incontinence

Urology Residency and Pediatric Urology Fellowship Programs

The residency program is a five‐year program with three residents per year.  The residents spend 4 months on Pediatric Urology at CW during each of their PG-2 and PG-4 years of training.  The pediatric urology fellowship is an ACGME‐accredited two-year fellowship.  It has built a strong reputation for its large volume and breadth of complex pediatric surgery training. It is supported by a strong clinical research program.

Position Requirements:

Experience and Qualifications

Candidate should possess the following qualifications, experience, and skills:

• MD, DO, MD/PhD, fellowship trained in Pediatric Urology and board certified in Urology
• Eligible for an unrestricted license in the State of Wisconsin
• Academic leadership experience and accomplishment commensurate with MCW faculty appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level
• Experience in medical education/administration, strong evidence of administrative ability, including, but not limited to, interpersonal, leadership, and management skills
• Urology-related leadership with demonstrated strategic and implementation skills
• Recognition of the value of growing all missions in the Division (research, clinical, education and community service)
• Superior record in building a collaborative team
• Proven healthcare leadership and management skills
• Solid business acumen, financial budgeting, and resource management skills
