Section of Pediatric Emergency Medicine

Striving to provide the best care for kids, the pediatric emergency medicine team consists of thirty-four board-certified faculty physicians, eight fellows (increasing to nine fellows in 2024), eleven physician assistants, and six nurse practitioners. Administrative support includes a division administrator, data analyst, clinical research manager, clinical research coordinators, administrative assistants, and an education program coordinator.  In addition to academic duties at the Medical College of Wisconsin, the faculty and fellows serve as attending physicians in the Children’s Wisconsin Emergency Department.

The team provides pediatric trauma care to approximately 75,000 patients annually from Wisconsin and the Midwest.  In October 2023, the new Skywalk Building opened featuring a new Pediatric Emergency Department and Level 1 Trauma Center, pediatric and neonatal transport team, and Skywalk retail pharmacy.  The Skywalk Building, funded in part by Ladish Co. Foundation and the Jendusa family, was designed to improve and expand family access to emergency services and expand the services available for patients and families. The building features:

  • 50 treatment rooms, including two rooms designed to better support mental and behavioral health needs, and two advanced trauma and resuscitation rooms.
  • The Skywalk Pharmacy, offering retail pharmaceutical services, such as a “meds-to-beds” program for patients discharged from the hospital, specialized medication compounding and home delivery.  This pharmacy enhances the quality of care for patients seen in the emergency department, allowing for immediate pick-up of prescriptions.

The thriving Pediatric Emergency Medicine ACGME accredited Fellowship has been preparing fellows for subspecialty board certification for over 25 years and is currently training eight fellows (increasing to nine in 2024) to become experts in providing pediatric emergency care.

Research

Research is a priority for the Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) section, focusing on high impact research and quality improvement projects that enhance patient care locally and nationally. The broad range of our faculty's academic interests reflect the responsibility PEM physicians feel for the continuum of emergency care: from pre-hospital treatment to emergency department care, and through transition to inpatient care, treatment at home or follow-up care.  Faculty and fellows are actively involved in numerous research projects with over $8.2 million in funding and averaging 25 research publications per year. Additionally, Children’s Wisconsin-Medical College of Wisconsin is a participating research site for the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN), including the HOMERUN node and the CHaMP node.  For a list of on-going research studies, please refer to the full position profile.

Community Efforts

The Social Medicine and Advocacy Committee (SMAC) is housed within the Section of Emergency Medicine and is a group that is responsive to community needs as they pertain to access to care, health care disparities, and social determinants of health.  SMAC takes ideas from the clinical practitioners and translates them into actionable improvements for patient experience.  Most notably, SMAC has lead efforts in the enterprise around food insecurities in patients and piloted ways to screen for food insecurity and connect families to resources.  SMAC is highly involved in community efforts around reducing firearm violence, increasing family access to food and educational resources, and improving patient access to care through partnerships with other departments.

Project UJIMA is a collaborative, multidisciplinary program geared to stop violent behavior patterns and reduce the number of children hurt by violence.  Team members support victims of violence throughout their recovery at Children’s Wisconsin, at their homes, and in their communities.  “UJIMA” means working together to make things right.  It is one of the themes of Kwanza, and African American celebration. Follow-up services are provided by a community liaison, a dedicated nurse, and mental health services are offered when necessary.
