ABOUT THE JOB

MU Health Care invites an outstanding candidate to fill the role of System-Level Chief Operating Officer (COO). This pivotal position oversees our extensive network of acute-care hospitals. The COO will be responsible for managing the daily operations of MU Health Care’s inpatient services, as well as all professional and support services across the healthcare system. This role demands ownership and accountability in formulating and implementing action plans that align with MUHC's strategies, aiming to achieve operational excellence.

Reporting to the CEO of MUHC, Ric Ransom, the COO participates in the development of MUHC strategy, enforces policies and procedures, ensures the highest quality of care, and ensures that all related federal, state, and local regulatory, compliance, quality, and patient safety standards are consistently met. Additionally, the COO is responsible for patient, team member, and physician engagement results.

We are seeking an individual who is currently serving in a C-level or equivalent role within a multi-hospital health system. The ideal candidate should have at least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in multi-hospital acute care operations, coupled with substantial experience working within an academic health system. A background that includes working with surgical and emergency service lines is highly preferred, demonstrating a deep understanding of these critical areas of healthcare. Communication and collaboration acumen are of the utmost importance in this role, which requires cross-functional collaboration within patient care and academic settings.

SALARY RANGE   $322,000.00 - $558,000.00

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Leads all operations of MU Health Care’s inpatient, operating rooms, clinical support, emergency and pre-hospital services, facilities, and support service functions.
  • Serves as a trusted operating partner and advisor to the CEO.
  • Responsible for the achievement of short and long-term clinical, operational, financial, growth, and human capital goals.
  • Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to promote an integrated approach to providing services and meeting the system’s mission of patient care, education, and research.
  • Partners with physician leadership and individual physicians to facilitate access, and prudent use of resources along with excellence in outcomes and patient experience. 
  • Leads continuous improvement of operations to enhance clinical outcomes and increase patient, physician, and employee engagement of staff at all levels of the organization.
  • Provides direction and leadership in the development of planning for physical facilities and equipment for MU Health Care facilities to meet the needs of the patients and care providers.
  • Ensures the optimal use of resources through the development of and monitoring of key financial indicators, variance analysis, expense reduction, productivity enhancement, and statistical analysis.
  • In partnership with the CEO, contributes to the development and management of the operating and capital budgets to conform and support the strategic and financial plans through the annual budget process, the monthly financial review process, expenditure of allocated funds, and appropriate charge capture/revenue recognition for services rendered.
  • Participates in hospital, medical staff, campus and community activities, and educational programs.
  • Is visible, accessible, and transparent with colleagues, physicians, staff, and patients. Participates in and supports outreach activities of MU Health Care.
  • Supports and provides leadership for clinical integration/consolidation and operating efficiency opportunities within MUHC, affiliates, and network partners.
  • Represents MU Health Care as needed in various professional and business organizations.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations and other policies and procedures to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.
  • Maximizes talent. Provides counsel, leadership, guidance, direction, and assistance in the development of an organizational culture appropriate to support the mission of MU Health Care.
  • Employs participative management and leadership approaches that optimize the organization’s resources and talent effectiveness.
  • Empower others to exercise leadership in achieving goals, developing new concepts, and taking initiative.
  • Works in partnership with the CEO in providing leadership and direction in managing the planning, construction, and development of the new Children’s Hospital.
  • In partnership with medical leadership, sets standards of excellence for clinical outcomes and uses data to drive standardization and change.

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A master's degree in healthcare administration, business administration, or a related field.
  • Ten (10) years of experience in an operational role in a healthcare setting.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • C-level or equivalent experience.
  • Significant operational experience in an academic health system.
  • Experience in managing facilities improvement and/or major building/construction projects.
  • Experience in the development and/or market share improvement of service lines in collaboration with physicians in a competitive market
