CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER (COO) Medical West - Bessemer AL - an affiliate of the UAB Health System

The Chief Operating Officer serves as a member of the senior leadership team in the development and implementation of Medical West’s mission, strategic imperatives/objectives, patient care programs, budgets, and resource allocation.  Coordinates the senior leadership team’s efforts to ensure that day-to-day operations of a 310 bed hospital, freestanding emergency department, and multiple health centers are conducted in a manner that provides excellent patient-centered care and services while ensuring fiscal responsibility.

Medical West, an affiliate of UAB Health System, is searching for a chief operating officer (COO) for a new hospital scheduled to open in 2024. Medical West is an affiliate of UAB Medicine’s Community Network representing UAB Health System’s relationship with hospitals across the state and region. Affiliates of the Community Network are Health Care or University Authorities managed by UAB Health System. At these affiliate locations, UABHS provides senior executives and board oversight to improve operations. We work closely with the affiliates to leverage our strengths in a cooperative way, working together to reduce cost and improve the delivery of care in their respective communities. In return, the affiliate contributes to the academic mission of the UAB Health System, supporting our educational mission.

This position requires a graduate degree in Health Administration, Business or a related field.  Five (5) or more years of management experience to include hands-on experience in providing oversight for hospital operations is required. Previous experience as a Chief Operating Officer is preferred. Knowledge of the laws and accreditation standards applicable to hospitals is also required. Must be highly experienced working with and relating to a medical staff representing a vast array of specialty areas.  Incumbent should possess a proven track record of solid and well-developed physician relationships.
