Position Description
Reporting to the Executive Director and Associate Provost for Campus Health and Wellbeing, the Chief Medical Officer/Physician in Chief will be a key member of the Harvard University Health Services’ senior leadership team. In collaboration with senior leaders of the organization, the CMO/PiC leads and participates in strategic projects and initiatives to achieve goals and objectives in the management of the delivery system, and engages in problem solving, and long-range planning.
The CMO/PiC is responsible for the delivery of high standard, cost effective medical care in a manner that incorporates values of equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Responsibilities include planning and directing the functioning of Internal Medicine, Urgent Care, Faculty and Staff Behavioral Health, Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety, Credentialing, Care Coordination, Physical Therapy, and all other Medical and Surgical Specialties. The CMO/PiC supervises 14 individual direct reports and is responsible for the performance of a staff of approximately 46 FTE/60 individuals. The CMO/PiC fulfills a 20% practice effort while devoting approximately 80% effort to clinical, administrative, and strategic leadership.
Specific domains of responsibility for the CMO/PiC include:
Leadership & Management
  • Oversees the Chief of Primary Care Medicine, Physician Chiefs of Specialty Services, Director of Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety, Manager of Care Coordination, Chief of Physical Therapy, Clinical Staff Registrar, and Executive Assistant including conducting annual performance evaluations.
  • Chairs the Patient Care Assessment Committee (PCAC), which is the key clinical governing body for HUHS, which includes senior leaders of all clinical areas and has oversight of chartered clinical committees including the Laboratory Quality Committee, the Medical Records Committee, and the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
  • Functions as the primary clinical advisor to the Executive Director and other staff on policies, procedures, program planning, and strategy pertaining to HUHS clinical services.
  • Directs the activities of the assigned clinical areas, establishing standards of professionalism and service for the clinical areas of responsibility.
  • Evaluates and delivers feedback on physician performance, including quality of care, access and productivity, patient communication, team collaboration, and patient satisfaction.
  • Maintains outpatient responsibilities as a practicing physician (20% effort).
  • Advises clinical staff and adjudicates unusual and difficult medical cases.
  • Recruits and makes recommendations for staffing, hires, and promotions.
  • Oversees the credentialing process for licensed clinical staff.
  • Fosters a positive working relationship and coordinates activities with other Harvard University Health Services’ service areas.
  • Serves on ad hoc and standing internal committees and teams including Executive Committee, Senior Leadership Team, and the Student Health Insurance Advisory Committee.

Quality & Safety
  • Champions the quality and safety program, including oversight and support of Director of Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety in the initiation and implementation of appropriate and effective quality improvement projects.
  • Oversees departmental quality assurance efforts and utilization management activities for services.
  • Leads in the advancement of the HUHS population health agenda.
  • Analyzes Press Ganey data and patient feedback for trends and takes appropriate action, including collaboration with the Patient Advocate to address patient, family, and community concerns.
  • Carefully examines adverse outcomes or near misses by conducting root cause analysis with an interdisciplinary team.
  • Oversees renewal of Department of Public Health licenses and the assignment of DEA numbers to resident physicians.

Financial
  • Collaborates with Practice Managers and the Finance Department in preparing and monitoring budgets for clinical areas.
  • Regularly reviews the financial health of HUHS and identifies cost-effective measures and interventions, implementing them with appropriate approvals, smoothly and effectively.
  • Develops a long-term financial strategy in collaboration with other members of the senior leadership team.
  • Fosters financial literacy among clinical staff, empowering them to better stewards HUHS resources.

External/University Contacts
  • Acts as an ambassador to campus partners and external healthcare organizations.
  • Represents HUHS at professional and University meetings, including CRICO, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Ivy Plus, the American College Health Association, and the University Travel Advisory Board.
  • Fosters and monitors HUHS relationships with clinical leaders at affiliated hospitals and health systems to ensure continued high 8 quality of care for emergency, outpatient, and hospital care at those institutions. These include Mount Auburn Radiology and Mount Auburn OB-GYN, Beth Israel Lahey Health System, and Mass General Brigham.

Among the criteria used to measure the success of the CMO/PiC in the first year are:
  • Development of trusting relationships with peers and colleagues throughout HUHS, and a reputation as an empathic and inspiring change agent.
  • Identification of operational and structural changes and development of short- and long-term plans for implementation.
  • Measurable improvement in patient access to clinical services.
  • Measures of staff morale and retention.
  • Evidence of courageous leadership, manifested by the ability to make decisions and hold accountability in challenging situations.
  • Reputation as a visible and passionate advocate for equity, health, and wellbeing throughout the Harvard community.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop leaders within HUHS.
Basic Qualifications
  • Board Certified in their medical specialty with 10+ years of clinical experience in an ambulatory medical practice setting.
  • Current licensure or eligible for licensure in the State of Massachusetts.
