Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO)

The Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO) is a key member of the University of Miami Information Technology Leadership Team.  The CAIO’s primary responsibility is to drive the strategic vision, development, and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives across all three parts of our mission, Academics, Clinical Care and Research.  The CAIO will play a crucial role in ensuring that AI technologies are leveraged effectively and ethically to achieve our academic and healthcare industry leading AI value creation goals.
 

Responsibilities
 

AI Strategy and Vision:

  • Develop and communicate a clear AI strategy aligned with the University of Miami’s overall vision and goals.

  • Identify opportunities where AI can enhance enterprise services processes, improve efficiency, and drive innovation.
     

Leadership and Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with other executives, including the Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Chief Data Officer (CDO), and Chief Medical Infomatics Officer (CMIO), to integrate AI into the university’s overall technology roadmap.

  • Lead cross-functional teams, data scientists, and engineers to execute AI projects.
     

Ethical AI Implementation:

  • Ensure that AI solutions adhere to ethical guidelines and legal requirements.

  • Promote transparency, fairness, and accountability in AI decision-making.
     

Technology Evaluation and Adoption:

  • Stay informed about the latest advancements in AI, machine learning, and related technologies.

  • Evaluate and recommend AI tools, platforms, and frameworks for adoption.
     

Data Governance and Management:

  • Collaborate with the Chief Data Officer to ensure high-quality data availability for AI model training.

  • Establish data governance practices to maintain data privacy and security.
     

Risk Management:

  • Assess risks associated with AI implementation, including bias, security, and compliance.

  • Mitigate risks through robust testing and monitoring processes.
     

Stakeholder Communication:

  • Communicate AI initiatives, progress, and outcomes to stakeholders, including the board of directors and external partners.

Qualifications

  • Education:

    • A doctoral degree in computer technology, physics, math or similar field of study required.
       

  • Experience:

    • Proven experience in leading AI projects and teams.

    • Strong understanding of machine learning, natural language processing, and deep learning.

    • Familiarity with cloud-based AI services and platforms.

    • Knowledge of regulatory frameworks related to AI (e.g., GDPR, CCPA).
       

  • Leadership Skills:

    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

    • Ability to influence and drive change across the organization.

    • Strategic thinking and vision.
