Purpose

The Chief Development Officer will lead the development of a comprehensive campaign fundraising plan that optimizes the best of the college’s resources, which include an inspirational and motivated Dean and leadership team, highly innovative programs and centers, an outstanding faculty, talented staff, committed alumni and friends, world-class students, and a Texas development program that is well-resourced and on the rise by every measure. The successful candidate, an exceptional fundraiser, manager and colleague, will lead and mentor a team and manage a limited portfolio of high impact supporters.

Reporting to and partnering closely with Dean Rachel Davis Mersey, the Chief Development Officer for the Moody College of Communication will play an essential leadership role in advancing overall college fundraising and, in doing so, position Moody to contribute to the What Starts Here campaign. The What Starts Here campaign is the most ambitious fundraising effort in the history of The University of Texas at Austin and the state of Texas. Investment from our alumni, friends and partners enables the University to support our people, amplify the unmatched potential of our place, and lead innovation through world-changing pursuits. The campaign publicly launched in March 2022, receiving $3.4 billion from more than 241,000 donors during its silent phase. To date, Longhorn Nation has invested more than $4.7 billion toward our $6 billion goal, positioning us for a successful completion of the campaign by 2026.


Responsibilities

  • As a direct report to the Dean, the CDO will have the opportunity to actively participate on the Dean’s senior leadership team, providing professional insight and advice based on an extensive depth and breadth of knowledge and experience.

  • Drive the planning, budget and strategic direction of customized and comprehensive fundraising plans, oversight and successful achievement of goals and oversight of the implementation and management of all development activities, including timelines, budget, staff and outside counsel.

  • Manage a limited portfolio of high impact supporters, solicit gifts and conduct executive prospect strategy meetings with the Dean to maximize time with donors. Create robust and highly proactive major and planned giving programs, whereby progress can be measured quantitatively. Deliver on quantifiable goals, specifically excelling in successful major and principal gift solicitations.

  • Establish and maintain strong and mutually beneficial relationships with external contacts and constituents on behalf of Moody College, including the Moody College Advisory Council.

  • Manage and mentor development staff, including establishing and communicating fundraising goals, providing leadership on major gift cultivation and solicitation strategies and establishing regular performance evaluations.

  • Travel throughout the United States and around the globe, representing the College and building relationships with its donors, prospects and alumni.

  • Work collaboratively and proactively with Texas Development to further the fundraising efforts of the Moody College of Communication. Create and nurture a culture of philanthropy within the College and its constituencies.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree. Seven+ years of experience as a development professional. Proven track record of closing six- and seven-figure plus gifts. Ability to build significant relationships with new and existing donors. Ambition and skills to strategically grow a successful team. Exemplary written and oral communications skills. High degree of emotional intelligence. Experience with a comprehensive campaign in a complex setting. Intellectual curiosity and desire to appreciate, understand, and advance the academic and scientific pursuits of the school to donors, and the general public. Ability to think strategically and creatively and work well under pressure. Capable of working independently, while also engaging in collaboration between teams. Highly organized, collaborative, and collegial. Ability to travel throughout the United States to visit prospects and donors. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree or higher. Experience in higher education fundraising coupled with the ability to connect with faculty and effectively communicate their areas of research to donors.

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
