Job Summary

The Chief Development Officer & Assistant Vice Chancellor, Children’s Health is responsible for designing and directing fundraising strategies for UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals, the UCSF Department of Pediatrics, and other pediatric subspecialties, for the purposes of patient care, research, education, and advocacy.  Reporting to UCSF’s Vice Chancellor for University Development, and with a dotted line to the President of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals, the CDO/AVC will work seamlessly with and be accountable to all levels of leadership within the Children’s Health Enterprise across both Oakland and San Francisco—including the President of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals, the CEO of UCSF Health, the Chancellor of UCSF, the Chair of the UCSF Department of Pediatrics, and high level volunteers—to create a cohesive development structure and help the overall institution achieve its goals through philanthropy.  The CDO/AVC will oversee development officers to ensure they are working effectively to address the fundraising goals of their areas as well as the Children’s Health Enterprise as a whole. In addition to substantial leadership and management responsibilities, including foundation operations, fund distribution, communications and external relations, the CDO/AVC will play a significant role working with the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals Board of Directors, and will represent UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals in the community as a visible member of the Executive leadership team. The CDO/AVC will also serve as the President of the Children’s Hospital Research Center Oakland Foundation (DBA UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals Foundation). Similar to other enterprise positions (such as the COO, CFO, and Chief Strategy Officer), the CDO/AVC will be expected to maintain a physical presence on a weekly basis in both Oakland and San Francisco.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

 

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The UCSF Foundation and the Office of University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) are responsible for fostering and strengthening the campus outreach efforts to UCSF constituents and for garnering private support for the campus and the Medical Center. In raising private support, UDAR identifies, qualifies, solicits and stewards donors for the schools, medical centers, departments and programs on campus; accepts and administers all private gifts to the university through The Regents or the UCSF Foundation; and manages all alumni relations activities, campus support group activities and campus events. The UDAR office staffs the UCSF Foundation. The office is also responsible for the design and implementation of fundraising campaigns for UCSF.


Required Qualifications

Expert knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor and public relations, including principles, concepts, techniques and procedures.
Expert knowledge of design and implementation of donor identification, cultivation and solicitation strategies and techniques.
Expert leadership / management skills and experience, including skills to select, train, mentor, motivate and evaluate all levels of staff.
Expert written, oral and interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain effectively working relationship within all organizational levels and with outside constituencies.
At least 10 years’ experience working in fundraising or related roles of increasing responsibility.
Demonstrated ability to close major gifts of $5M and above.
Bachelor's degree in related area.
