POSITION:                CHEMISTRY TUTORS

DIVISION:                ACADEMIC AFFAIRS/METROPOLITAN COLLEGE OF PROFESSIONAL STUDIES

 NOTE:  This is a Part-Time position.

Responsibilities:        Under general supervision of the Chair of the Business Administration and Economics Department, tutors will assist chemistry students enrolled in introductory courses and report their progress to the Director of the Minority Science Engineering Improvement Project (MSEIP) and faculty as outlined by guidelines and procedures as part of the 2020 grant-funded Minority Science Engineering Improvement Project (MSEIP).  Must adhere to all University policies and procedures, with the administrative support of the Natural Science Department.  required to work a minimum of seven (7) hours per week during the current timeline. Guide students in the step-by-step procedures for the scientific tests to ensure the safety of the students; arrange and prepare students in the laboratory for science experiments.

Assist students in understanding the fundamental principles of chemistry in relation to the physical and chemical properties of the metallic and nonmetallic elements and their compounds. Work with students one-on-one and in small groups; explain concepts in a manner that students understand. Communicate with and provide documentation of student progress to the Director, Co-Director, and professors about the course topics, assignments, student attendance and expectations; complete data entry tasks using required database software (Canvas, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, Google, etc.).  Prepare for tutoring sessions by reviewing the course textbook, old exams, and recorded class lectures; schedule regular tutoring sessions with students each week to discuss and review course topics, assist the students in preparing for quizzes and exams, and provide strategies for effective note-taking and studying; use high-speed internet and a computer with a webcam to work remotely. Tutor students during the evenings and on weekends, as needed, and be accessible to students by phone as necessary; assist with developing and maintaining Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and related resources for students as repetitive questions arise throughout the sessions.  This position reports to the Director of the Minority Science Engineering Improvement Project.

Qualifications:         Requires a Bachelor's degree in chemistry, physical science, or related field, with a minimum of 2 years of teaching and/or tutoring experience is required. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills. Must be comfortable providing tutoring services via face-to-face or by web conferencing (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google, etc.).

Finalists for this position are subject to a background check.  Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background investigation including criminal history and identity check.
