Support lab activities and instruction for the Chemistry program. Ensure safe and effective operation of Chemistry lab facilities.
The lab technician oversees the operation of laboratories used by the Chemistry program. The technician's responsibilities and duties fall in three primary categories: supporting instruction, ensuring safety, and maintaining operations.
Supporting Instruction: The lab technician oversees the preparation of laboratory courses in the Chemistry program. These duties include: preparation of chemical reagents and solutions, generation of laboratory preparation notes for laboratory experiments, assisting faculty members in procuring equipment, instruments and supplies, including chemicals, disposables (latex gloves, pipettes, etc.), supplies and software for laboratories. The technician also assists with ongoing purchasing, Accounts Payable, and Receiving activities. The technician supervises and trains student laboratory assistants assigned to the Chemistry stockroom. The technician will be responsible for maintaining the Chemistry department website.
Environment, Hazardous Waste, and Safety: The technician is partially responsible for ensuring a safe environment for learning, work, and research. He/she will work with the Chemistry safety officer concerning issues requiring attention. The technician will maintain a chemical inventory database, including monitoring for regulated substances, and arrange chemical waste disposal. He/she will also arrange for proper storage of chemicals by hazardous class (flammable liquids, water-reactive/flammable solids, acids, oxidizers, bases, etc?) and ensure proper segregation of incompatible chemicals. The technician must follow appropriate federal and state laws and regulations concerning laboratory, chemical and biohazard safety. The technician will communicate with the campus Environmental Health and Safety office as appropriate and work with the designated Chemistry safety officer to ensure the safe operation of Chemistry labs. He/she will assist the Chemistry safety officer and chair in maintaining records of safety training for instructors, student assistants, researchers and others involved in laboratory activities.
Maintaining Operations & Equipment: The technicians support the ongoing operation of equipment and systems integral to the Chemistry program. This includes performing routine tests, calibrations, installations, and maintenance of instrumentation for laboratories. The technician will schedule preventative maintenance on instruments and maintain instrument records. He/she will assist laboratory instructors with lab equipment operation and monitor student use of equipment in laboratory sections to ensure that equipment is not damaged and that the equipment is operating correctly for a positive educational experience. The technician will regularly test fume hoods for air flow capacity and arrange for regular inspections and repair of chemical fume hoods to ensure they meet operational and legal requirements.
Support for evening laboratories may be required.
Perform other duties in support of the Chemistry program as required.
Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of the principles and methods related to performing support services; ability to maintain scientific instrumentation and communicate with instrument service technicians in person or on the phone to troubleshoot an instrument; ability to operate scientific or highly technical equipment; knowledge of the principles, information, methods, techniques, materials and supplies related to Chemistry, their characteristics, and uses. Ability to plan, organize and schedule work. Experience in biological and chemical hazard management. Knowledge of Federal and State laws concerning laboratory, chemical, and biohazard safety, specified in OSHA Laboratory Standard - Federal Register Vol. 55, No. 21, Part 1910 and California Code of Regulations under Title 8. Ability to communicate effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Knowledgeable in upper-division Chemistry laboratory courses (including biochemistry) generally offered by Chemistry programs and their associated instructional equipment and supplies. Capable of interacting positively with students, faculty, administrators, non-technical staff and vendor representatives. Ability to work independently and adapt to new situations.
Education: A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or Biochemistry or related scientific discipline from an accredited university. Successful completion of upper division chemistry coursework is required.
Desired Qualifications: Experience as an instructional support technician at a four-year comprehensive university preparing laboratory courses including biochemistry for chemistry programs. Demonstrated experience with a wide variety of laboratory techniques and instrumentation and the biological and chemical principles concerning their use.
Frequent/Continuous reaching within arm's distance, frequent sitting in office chair or standing for up to 5-7 hours at a time. Occasional lifting/carrying of up to 30 pounds at waist level within office and laboratory areas, continuous use of hands to operate telephone, computer systems, laboratory equipment and preparatio of labs, occasional reaching at or above waist level and shoulder level, occasional bending and/or stooping at the waist, continuous use of hands for grasping, fine manipulation and ability to stand/walk up to 20 minutes at a time, over uneven terrain, and up slopes.
