Job Description:

This junior (entry-level) chemist position (Chemist I) works in a Medicinal Chemistry laboratory setting, assists the Principal Investigator (PI) in the purification and synthesis of natural products and small organic molecules with potential medical uses. The position performs preparation, purification, and characterization of small organic molecules, as well as purification and isolation of natural products from complex mixtures up to the gram scale. The position works under immediate supervision and relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the job functions . This position will also include routine maintenance of laboratory equipment, managing compound library and chemical inventory, ordering lab supplies, as well as maintaining a safe, clean work environment. Other responsibilities include reporting results to PI and in lab meetings and assist in the writing of publications and reports.
Job Description:
Prepare and carry out experiments, including set up the reaction, work up, purify the product, and characterize the structure and purity of the product. Modify procedures and experimental design as necessary.

Maintain laboratory equipment, clean lab and fume hoods, handle hazardous waste, manage compound library, manage chemical inventory, order lab supplies, coordinate with biologists for testing samples in bioassays, train students and lab technician on the use of lab instruments.

Record experimental procedures and data on lab notebook, report results to PI and in lab meetings, assist in writing manuscripts and reports .

Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Expected Salary:

Up to $21.55 per hour

Minimum Requirements:

 A bachelor's degree in chemistry or a closely related field

Preferred Qualifications:

Have working knowledge of organic chemistry and analytical chemistry.  Experience in a drug discovery and development research environment. Hand-on experience on the use of NMR, LC-MS, TLC-MS, and prep-HPLC.   Able to interpret 1D and 2D NMR spectra. Good organizational skills to adapt to fluctuating workloads while maintaining appropriate attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to follow established laboratory safety procedures, to maintain accurate records, and clearly and accurately read and write and transcribe data. Good communications skills-verbal and written communication. Good interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently or as a member of a team.
