Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting a Chemist 5 for the Nevada State Public Health Laboratory. This position will supervise, coordinate and oversee the overall operation of the Nevada State Public Health Laboratory (NSPHL) Environmental Chemistry Department, ensure analyses are completed timely, efficiently and in compliance with regulatory and quality requirements. This position regularly performs daily testing duties, maintains competency in departmental test methods, monitors daily turnaround time of test results, instrument performance, and staff daily efficiency, performs internal audits, establishes and revises departmental policies and procedures, develops and maintains quality control and quality assurance procedures, ensures equipment functions correctly, documents issues and resolution. This position will hire, train, supervise, and evaluate the performance of departmental chemists and laboratory technicians, develop work standards, provide technical expertise, maintain current knowledge of technological advancements and incorporate relevant technology and methods into the workflow, act as the department subject matter expert during regulatory onsite or virtual inspections, providing documents and completing checklists and other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry or closely related field and five years of progressively responsible professional experience as a chemist in a laboratory setting; OR

  • One year of experience as a Chemist IV in Nevada State service; OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.

Schedule

The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs.

Compensation Grade

Grade 38 (Entry, Step 01 $31.63/hr. – Step 03 $34.54/hr.)

In classified service, salary is in Grade and Step. The Step is determined based on the Nevada Administrative Code. Salary placement above a Step 01 at initial appointment is determined based on the recruitment, the candidate’s qualifications, internal equity and budgets. A request to accelerate salary must be approved by Human Resources and abide by the Nevada Administrative Code.
