Job Summary

Under the supervision of the ChemCentral Team Lead or Supervisor, the Junior Chemical Management Specialist will work as part of a team to maintain a comprehensive chemical management program across multiple UCSF campuses. Duties include receiving and unpackaging chemicals; adding chemicals to inventories using handheld scanners; barcoding chemical containers and entering information such as chemical name, physical state, & container types into the inventory system using a mobile app; delivering chemicals to laboratories; providing technical support and ad hoc training to end users of the purchasing system; and conducting routine reconciliation of both stockroom and laboratory chemical inventories,

The job requires attention to detail and the ability to follow detailed standard operating procedures. A strong commitment to customer service is required. Knowledge of chemical hazards and laboratory safety protocols is preferred.

Department Description

The Research Resource Program (RRP) provides strategic planning and implementation of programs to support core facilities and other research resources at UCSF.  RRP also provides administrative, operational, and financial management tools and support to core facilities.

ChemCentral is a strategic chemical management program designed to create efficiency in the chemical supply chain, increase laboratory safety and chemical compliance, and bring UCSF closer to its sustainability goals. This is achieved through a series of stockroom and central receiving facilities located throughout the UCSF campuses.


Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Has taken some college-level chemistry and related laboratory coursework.
  • Working knowledge of chemical hazards and laboratory safety protocols
  • Ability to obtain knowledge of chemical management policies, regulatory requirements, and safety regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to read and interpret inventory practices and procedures used in the receipt, storage, and distribution of chemicals.
  • Proficiency in the use of standard spreadsheet and word processing software.  (i.e. Microsoft suite of products – Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • 1 year of experience working in a laboratory or chemical stockroom 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain knowledge of storeroom and inventory practices, procedures used in the receipt, storage, and distribution of chemicals
  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
