Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Student Technical Assistant position for the Department of Chemistry at Oregon State University (OSU).
The Chemistry Department Student Worker reports to the Chemistry Facilities & Operations Manager helping the Chemistry Department Store (ChemStores) and other Chemistry Department’s needs within both Chemistry Buildings: Gilbert Hall and Linus Pauling Science Center (LPSC)
Position Duties
The position’s primary job will be in the ChemStores. In that role, they are responsible for assisting customers, improving and maintaining the stores’ appearance, maintaining storerooms, reducing inventory loss, delivering departmental orders, assisting in the annual Chem Store Inventory (during Spring Break), and other store tasks as directed by their supervisor. Standard ChemStores Duties include, but not limited to:
Assisting Customers both in person and on the telephone
  • Assisting in locating products in the store
  • Retrieving chemicals and supplies from the auxiliary storage locations, including the Vault, Chem Room, and Basement
  • Dispensing bulk chemicals
  • Utilizing the checkout computers
  • Transporting materials and chemicals from Gilbert to LPSC
  • Random Inventory checks (stock counts, Location labeling, barcode SKU’s, etc.)
  • Communicating any issues with Classified Staff

Store Appearance:
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the store. (Sweep, Mop, Dust, etc)
  • Face products on Shelves
  • Restock products from up-stock and secondary storage locations

  • Affix barcode labels or ensure product tags are available at the location(s)
  • Breaking down and dispose of cardboard boxes
  • Restocking of shelves with merchandise
  • Maintain or create displays with signage to better advertise and assist customers in their shopping experience
  • The student will also support the Chemistry Department in various functions including maintaining Chemistry’s Buildings and Chemistry Departmental events.

Building Support Functions Include, but not limited to:
  • Assisting in minor building repairs
  • Cleanup & prevention of water spills/flooding,
  • Sustaining exterior building grounds and landscaping
  • Maintaining general public areas for neatness and cleanliness

Assist in preparing offices, Labs, and other spaces for new and current faculty and space utilization by:
  • Cleaning out Building spaces
  • Moving furniture
  • Painting walls & ceilings
  • Cleaning carpets

Chemistry Departmental events include, but not limited to:
  • Setup for events
  • Assist in running the events
  • Breakdown after the event
  • Store equipment and unused supplies

Other Duties as Assigned by supervisor
Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 2 years.

  • Science background (Chemistry preferred), or a business background: Marketing,
  • Interior Design, Graphic Arts, Business Management, Merchandising Management,
  • Business & Entrepreneurship
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • Available throughout the day, specifically mornings
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs
  • Available to work at least part time during terms breaks (winter and summer)
  • Available to work at least part time during summer term.
