Basic Function
Under the direction of the Director of Athletics, plan, organize, coordinate and coach the intercollegiate cheerleading program within the academic and athletic philosophies of NCAA DIII, Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and the University Mission Statement.
Representative Duties
  • Plan, organize, coordinate and coach an assigned University athletic sporting team program within the academic and athletic philosophies of NCAA DIII, SCIAC and the University Mission Statement; verify eligibility of student athletes according to established regulations and procedures. E
  • Safely and successfully manage the daily operations of the cheerleading program. E
  • Support the development of the program to improve skills specific to
    competition, for regional and national success. E
  • Organize, prepare, and execute effective practice and game day/competition strategies. E
  • Coordinate, organize and participate in recruitment activities: recruiting and retaining student-athletes in accordance with NCAA DIII, SCIAC and institutional rules, regulations, and guidelines. E
  • Monitor and control assigned budgetary expenditures; plan and coordinate fund-raising activities; purchasing supplies, equipment, and materials according to established procedures. Follow purchasing guidelines established by the Athletic Dept. and the University. E
  • Act as a positive role model for student athletes. E
  • Organize and coordinate team meetings and activities.
  • Monitor the academic progress of student athletes and encourage their academic success through graduation. E
  • Coordinate and participate in student athletic recognition and awards ceremonies. E
  • Attend various coaches’ meetings and related conferences as assigned. E
  • Plan, coordinate, and schedule team travel to and from competition.
  • Supervise assistant coaches and other support staff. E
  • Perform related duties as assigned. E

E=Essential duties
Knowledge Of
  • Rules and regulations of SCIAC and Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association regarding eligibility recruiting practice limitations and related policies. Proper coaching and motivation techniques. Body mechanics principles, flexibility and strength training and mental training techniques and related health issues. Pedagogy of assigned sport. Technical aspects within field of specialty. Health and safety regulations. CPR and First Aid. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy. Public speaking techniques. Oral and written communication skills.

  • Effective promotion of good sportsmanship, academic excellence, positive attitudes, and character.
  • The care and prevention of athletic injuries, basic sports injury first aid, and emergency procedures.
  • Principles of sports leadership and training.
  • Basic liability and risk management issues.
Ability To
  • Plan, organize, coordinate and coach an assigned University athletic team program within the academic and athletic philosophies of the SCIAC and the University Mission Statement. Coordinate, organize and participate in recruitment activities. Monitor and control assigned budgetary expenditures. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, colleagues, and the public. Supervise assistant coaches and student staff, as necessary.
  • Provide training for assigned teams. Schedule and coordinate practice and conditioning sessions. Schedule and conduct team meetings as required. Effectively teach in a classroom setting when required. Maintain routine records. Determine appropriate action within clearly defined guidelines. Operate, service and make minor repairs to equipment.
  • Scout and recruit quality student-athletes.
  • Serve as a positive role model for student-athletes.
  • Maintain knowledge of and ensure compliance with University, NCAA, and SCIAC rules and regulations.
  • Objectively evaluate physical skills in physical potential and mental capability for intercollegiate athletics.
  • Effectively teach fundamentals, skills, regulations, position details, and sport strategies during preparation and practice sessions.
  • Provide effective leadership to student-athletes to encourage both successful academic development and competitive performance.
  • Work within a team-oriented philosophy.
  • Lift moderately heavy equipment and materials.
  • Provide a safe environment for students, athletes, visitors, and other constituents.
  • Analyze situations and adopt an effective course of action.
  • Work independently, prioritize, schedule, and complete work.
  • Communicate effectively, in oral and written forms.
  • Maintain confidentiality of records and information.
  • Maintain positive relationships with students, parents, guardians, colleagues, administrators, booster groups, foundations, and community organizations.
  • Maintain files accurately, on paper, and in software programs.
  • Handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Operate a personal computer and associated software
  • Coordinate and work summer camps.
  • Operate a vehicle to travel and conduct work.
  • Work flexible hours with frequent evenings and weekends.
  • Travel locally or nationally.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination equivalent to: Bachelor’s degree in relevant field; and one to three years of coaching experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Division III coaching experience in the sport preferably with a working knowledge of NCAA rules compliance. A proven ability to recruit and retain quality student-athletes. Commitment to the values, standards, and expectations of NCAA Division III athletics and a liberal arts university.
  • Accomplished coaching background
  • STUNT coaching experience.
  • Knowledge of NCAA DIII and SCIAC rules and regulations.
  • Appreciation for and understanding of NCAA DIII athletic philosophy.
  • Must maintain CPR/AED certification.
Licenses and other requirements
  • Valid California driver’s license.
  • Possess or ability to obtain a Class C driver’s license, insurance coverage (if driving own vehicle), or be insurable.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), AED (automated external defibrillator), and First Aid certifications within 90 days of employment.
Physical Abilities
Ability to communicate (verbally and in writing) and hear to exchange information; ability to walk, run, jump, stretch, stand, sit, bend, twist, use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl; lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; climb stairs, ropes or ladders; specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus and peripheral vision; ability to demonstrate proper techniques and skills needed for athletic participation; ability to operate a vehicle to travel to various sites to conduct work; ability to maintain level of physical fitness to meet departmental standards.
Environment
Working environment includes both indoors and outdoors; exposure to various weather conditions, including temperature extremes; Indoor work environment may not be air-conditioned during hot weather; subject to vehicle operation to conduct work; travel is required; frequent weekend and evening hours are required.
