About the Charles Henry Turner Post-Doctoral Fellowship

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music seeks a Charles Henry Turner Post-Doctoral Fellow in ethnomusicology or musicology to join the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory. The fellowship is named in honor of Charles Henry Turner , one of the first Black students to earn a graduate degree from the University of Cincinnati.

 

The Charles Henry Turner Post-Doctoral Fellowship is designed to provide participants with the opportunity to develop professional skills in preparation for a faculty career in academia. Fellows will receive mentorship from sponsoring faculty members, divisional colleagues, and university administrators if desired.

Job Overview

The Turner Post-Doctoral Fellowship is a two-year position. Under close supervision, the fellow will develop original research, teach core or develop new undergraduate or graduate courses in ethnomusicology or musicology based on their specializations, collaborate with ethnomusicology and musicology faculty on public research, and perform agreed upon service tasks. The post-doctoral appointment is for two years beginning from the date of hire. During this time, the fellow will develop her/his/their own scholarly/creative projects.

Essential Functions
  • Develop scholarly and/or creative projects in the area of ethnomusicology or musicology based on their specializations.
  • Develop professional skills in preparation for a faculty career in academia, and receive mentorship from sponsoring faculty members, divisional colleagues, and university administrators.
  • Present their research/creative projects in a public forum.
  • Teach two classes per academic year on special topics in the applicant’s area of expertise and/or in the core musicology or ethnomusicology curriculum.
  • Assist in various service-related duties as determined by the division head such as but not limited to the CCM DEI or Technology Committee.

 


Minimum Requirements

All of the following are required prior to effective date of appointment:

 

  • Ph.D. in ethnomusicology, musicology, or a closely related field. 
  • Research specialization in historically erased or marginalized musics, musicians, and musickings as evidenced by one published article in a professional journal, one book chapter, one conference presentation, or a PhD dissertation. Such research experience could be, but need not be, gained during the PhD.
