Our Kennesaw campus is located at 1000 Chastain Road NW, Kennesaw, GA 30144. Our Marietta campus is located at 1100 South Marietta Parkway, Marietta, GA 30060.


Department Information
 

Wellstar College's Department of Health Promotion and Physical Education is dedicated to preparing highly qualified and influential public health, health science, health and physical education, and coaching professionals. The Department promotes healthy living, physical fitness, and sport skill acquisition in the KSU academic community and the community at large. The Department offers a BS degree in Health & Physical Activity Leadership (with concentrations in P12 Health and Physical Education Teaching; Coaching; and Youth Activities Leadership), Integrated Health Science, Public Health Education, and a minor in Public Health and a certificate in Coaching. We have 20 full-time faculty and about 900 students across all three majors.


Job Summary
 

Kennesaw State University is now accepting applications for a full-time, twelve-month, administrative faculty position as a tenured Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Promotion and Physical Education in the Wellstar College of Health and Human Services with a preferred start date of July 1, 2024.  


Responsibilities
 

The Chair of Health Promotion and Physical Education (HPPE) is a 12-month position that reports directly to the Dean of the Wellstar College of Health and Human Services.  The Chair provides academic, administrative and financial leadership to a dynamic department of multidisciplinary full-time faculty, a large pool of part-time faculty, and one staff member.  The HPPE Department prepares engaged, innovative professionals and global citizens who are educated to enrich the lives of individuals and families through career paths working in public, private, and nonprofit healthcare sectors, community health departments, sports or wellness centers, and P-12 health and physical education. 

The Chair is expected to:

  • Be a strong, innovative, and strategic visionary with empowering, team-building and interpersonal skills 
  • Promote the vision and mission of the University, College, and the Department 
  • Serve as an instructional leader who supports student success and maintains a record of teaching effectiveness and research achievements 
  • Serve with a strong, decisive leadership style while engaging with faculty, students, staff, administrators, and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrate high-level interpersonal skills for communication, consultation, and collaboration
  • Strategically advocate for the mission and values of the Department
  • Provide strong and detailed Department budget oversight and management 
  • Promote a culture of trust, transparency, and collegiality 
  • Lead the Department using shared governance approaches 
  • Mentor faculty within and across interdisciplinary settings 
  • Advance a research agenda that contributes to the Department's efforts to obtain external funding, guide community-based research, and create interdisciplinary research teams
  • Enhance the research environment and grow the portfolio of external federal funding
  • Develop and implement graduate programs

Teaching assignments will be based on earned degrees and SACSCOC Faculty Credentials Guidelines.
 


Required Qualifications
 
  • A terminal degree, or foreign equivalent in Health Promotion, Physical Education, Health Sciences or related field with an academic background and appropriate credentials to be a tenured Professor in the Department of Health Promotion and Physical Education in the Wellstar College of Health and Human Services at KSU is required.
  • Have evidence of research productivity and output commensurate with the rank of full professor
  • Have academic expertise in one or more of the following Wellstar College research priority areas: health equity, rural health, mental health, community health, global health, adolescent health, mHealth, GIS, health behaviors, health policy and health administration
  • Have evidence of a strong record in administrative leadership in higher education
  • Have evidence of successful teaching in higher education
  • Have the ability to promote the vision and mission of the University, College, and the Department 
  • Have diverse professional experience supporting the administrative leadership role, including strategic planning, managing budgets, managing personnel, allocating resources, maintaining accreditations, seeking external funding, building community collaborations, and supporting faculty in producing high impact, externally funded research 
  • Have the ability to maintain a focus on the needs of Georgia and its workforce development
     

Preferred Qualifications
 
  • Administrative leadership experiences with budgets, hiring, retention, evaluations, professional development, scheduling of classes and other related department level duties in higher education 
  • Prior success in obtaining federal funding in support of research
