About the Department:

The Department of Earth, Environmental and Resource Sciences at UTEP is a vibrant group of 21 faculty representing a wide variety of geology, geophysics, hydrology, environmental science, and geography expertise. The degrees the Department offers include the B.S., B.A., M.S., and Ph.D. in Geological Sciences, the B.S. and M.S. in Environmental Science, the M.S. in Geophysics, and a minor in Geography. Our Ph.D. in Geological Sciences includes students with interests in any of these subdisciplines. We also support student training in cross-campus interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs including the Environmental Science and Engineering, Computational Science, and Data Science Ph.D. programs and collaborate frequently with human geographers and other faculty in the College of Liberal Arts. The Department research portfolio addresses local to global challenges in the environmental and natural resources fields while taking advantage of our regional geographic setting for research and education. Our integrative and collaborative efforts have resulted in research expenditures of $2.5M per year.

The Department of Earth, Environmental and Resource Sciences occupies an attractive, 90,000-sq. ft. building containing offices, laboratories, and classrooms. Training and research is aided by equipment in the department, including mineral separation equipment, a multi-collector ICP-MS, a laser ablation ICP-MS, an IRMS, variable-pressure SEM-EDS, scanning XRF and bench-top XRD systems, geophysical equipment including a seismic node pool and broadband instrumentation, a research computing labs with intermediate cluster resources, and extensive computational and software resources. The department also houses the Seismic Source Facility, a national resource for controlled source seismology. The collaborative research environment at UTEP affords access to a variety of analytical equipment in the Departments of Metallurgy and Materials Science, Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Biological Sciences and the Nanomaterials Integration Lab. Interactions with the Center for Environmental Resource Management and other multidisciplinary research centers are encouraged. A new building dedicated to interdisciplinary research opened in 2020.

Job Description:

The College of Science at The University of Texas at El Paso is seeking a dynamic leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Earth, Environmental and Resource Sciences. The Chair will join a multidisciplinary, collaborative, growing department with research activities spanning diverse areas of earth and environmental sciences. The successful candidate is expected to be an active researcher with a strong vision for developing and strengthening research and teaching initiatives. Applicants must have an outstanding record of accomplishment in research productivity as demonstrated by extramural funding, publications, mentoring of faculty and students, and program and personnel management. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment serving UTEP's mission of access and excellence as a premier Hispanic Serving Institution.

Requirements:

• PhD in a discipline appropriate for the Department of Earth, Environmental and Resource Sciences
• Current academic rank of tenured associate or full professor (or equivalent rank)
• Demonstrated leadership skills
• Excellent record of program, people, and financial management
